LG G2 Vs Nexus 5

The LG G2 looks like a great phone.

Yes, I know, the Nexus 5 has not been released yet. But, with all the leaks out on the internet (assuming the leaks to be true)... why buy an LG if the Nexus has the same spec's (except for a slight change in the display size 5.2" vs 5") ? It sounds like they will even share the same camera and processor.

I don't understand why LG would make two phones so similar. Explain to me why anyone would buy the LG after the Nexus comes out? The software would be the only difference.

The LG has a bigger battery, plus additions both useful and not so useful (double tap to turn on and off, bloat apps, etc.)

The LG may possibly have the better camera due to software, depending on what Google shows us with Kitkat.

Double tap to turn on could be useful. A lot of people do like features like slide2wake, etc. But yes I agree bloat is not a plus.

I'd bet the LG camera software will be better, but you don't necessarily need complicated software with 500 buttons to deliver good images (see iPhone 5). As long as they can maintain consistency in performance like the GPE phones provided, I'm ok with that. Ideally the AOSP camera app is improved.

The LG will have more software optimizations for the browser and the camera, which means it will be faster and more feature rich in those regards. It will have a significantly bigger battery at roughly 30% bigger than the Nexus 5's, giving it much better battery life. It will also probably have a much better charger and charging solution, which is why it charges so quick, and this is easily an area where Google will skimp to save a few pennies. It will probably have more storage, and use a better emmc controller than whatever makes it into the Nexus 5. Then you can add on top of that software optimizations which have been mentioned above. All of those add up to plenty enough reason to purchase a G2 over a Nexus 5, and that is before you add the fact that most poeple will see the G2 as a cheaper option than the Nexus 5 because of subsidized prices vs unsubsidized.

All that said, I am getting a Nexus 5.

Screen tap to turn on is something that can be easily replicated on a Nexus device.

I don't remember what it's called, but it's already existed for at least a year.

The g2 has the higher binned 2.3GHz snapdragon 800. I wouldn't be surprised if the nexus 5 uses the lower binned 2.2GHz s800.

I would love a link. On the G2 you can turn the screen on as well as off with a double tap.

Nexus phones are generally gimped on storage. I sure hope there is more than 16GB available this year or I might have to skip the Nexus this time.

I'm totally going for the N5 as long as it's a 5"(or more)/1080p, can't wait! Sick of running/flashing roms on my S4, which is even MORE useless stock.

Ugh, and that's why people like me buy the phones that just have the feature already. No interest in custom kernels.

That's your prerogative. I'm just saying if that feature alone is a decider, it's not much of one.

And rooting a nexus is dead simple. Add to that the fact that you don't have to install a custom ROM, just a kernel. LG bakes it in, you make it baked in, it's all the same.

$$$ will be one differentiator, I think, as well as battery life and storage size. We do not know what kind of price tags the Nexus 5 will carry. Assuming they go up slightly as happened to the Nexus 7, It can be anywhere between $350~$450 while the G2 will be $200 with a contract (and usual price drop sometime after).

I was going to buy the N5 and sell my GN2 until I saw they are downgrading the battery from the G2. That is the LAST thing they need to downgrade.

The G2 has a tiny but important edge in hardware due to the 3000 mAh battery but the N5 will be the better device to buy overall if a 32 GB variant is released. If the N5 is priced the similar to the N4 like last year, it would be a steal.

As someone who currently owns the S3 that still fits my everyday requirements, I'm starting to feel that spending $500+ for new phones every year or two is too much. I'm glad Google is making great devices like the N4 with excellent specs available very cheap, I hope Google continues in the same path with the N5.

Yea; nexus 4 was a dog when it came to battery life. There are two things nexus devices need. Bigger batteries and micro-sd slots (yes I know the g2 doesn't have one). Take the nexus 7; would you be willing to give up a little resolution or pay an extra $30 for 2x battery size ?

I'll likely get one of those phones but after using this vzw nexus I can say I have no desire to have awful battery life ever again.
