Friend is looking to upgrade his Droid phone.
Can get these for $150 new.
Which would you get?

What say you about G3 or S5 ?

G2 is $150
G3 is $200
He says G4 is too expensive.

Not an android guy, but around the office, there is a concensus that G2 is actually better than G3, anf definitely better than samsung.
It's the software they say that drags galaxy down. G2 is smoother and well balanced (G3 throttles a lot due to QHD screen).

So G2 is not a looker, and screen is obviously not as nice as S4, but overall better package.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Another option id Z2 which has awesome battery life, but camera is average, screen is not that good and there are software glitches on some firmwares and OS builds.

And of corse least attractive option for most is L930. Stellar camera, great AMOLED screen, good battery life, hassle free software, zero maintenence & crappy app store. I personally prefer windows because I couldn't care less about apps and everything a normal person needs is well covered (except banking, depending on country. In croatia, weirdly, banking apps are far better on WP, go figure).

The G2 is faster and has longer battery life than the GS4. I've owned both and overall I'd rate the G2 higher except that the GS4 has more updated Android.

Still using a G2, first phone to stop my upgrade-itis in its tracks almost 2 years ago. There is still an active rom community so it always has cm based roms rolling out, including cm13. Snapdragon 800, 5.2" screen and 3000mah battery still hold up very well. Never heard many nice things said about the S4.

G2 has SD800 which makes it worth it on it's own. Compare that to the S4's SD600 and it's an easy win for the G2.

g2, once you use the double tap to wake option every phone or ROM in the future you look for this feature. Superior battery life. I own a QHD screen now and 1080p or QHD on a 5" screen is the same to me.

I would go with G2 because it's easier to hack (eg install CM13 or other ROMS).

Not everyone. I disabled it on my lgv10.

What is this double tap thing on the G2 ?
I can't stand having to type my pin every time I want to wake the phone.

I also noticed after my system reset, sometimes, my lock pin isn't asked.
So the phone is no longer secure. Why does it sometimes as me for PIN, and other times, just asks me to swipe to unlock?

The double tap works as a second power button basically, you tap in the same spot on the display twice in succession, and the device can wake, or go to sleep. Works very nicely.

As far as the SD800, there are not many apps or games available that really demand anything more unless you count benchmarks. Combined with excellent battery life and good IPS display and the G2 is an excellent entry smartphone for today, even 2 years after it's introduction.

My only gripe is the lack of a MicroSD slot as 32 GB (max config) is getting pretty cramped for myself.

Not a fail at all.

S4 seems similar to LG G2 (2013) * *both are a HUGE upgrade from whatever he has now (Droid Inc2). *

Newer OS
Better camera
Better resolution & screen size
Better CPU
more RAM
Better battery

No brainer for $130. **

fail!

I should look into putting a ROM on my G2, for the marshmallow experience and just skip over lollipop entirely (currently on kit kat)
Be *very* careful doing this. First of all Lg put two different screen panels on the g2. If you flash the wrong kernel you can get permanent screen corruption. Some roms have kernels that automatically detect the correct panel but not all. The phones are also extraordinarily easy to hard brick. I had to pay a service $40 to unbrick mine. The ubuntu "fix" was above my pay grade.

It's possible that the marshmallow roms have all solved this problem but I wouldn't count on it.

Throw in the fact that Lg's quality control on these screens was sh*t (they frequently have yellow spots from poorly applied glue) and I would go with the s4. G2s are so cheap I'm often tempted to try again but then I remember how miserable my experience was the first time. Sigh.

from the specs alone, it looks like the G2 is a much better phone than the S4, and seems to be cheaper. I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. In fact, i'm considering picking one up for my dad now due to this thread.

I had the S4 till last month and i loved it, just got a note 4 instead and ended up selling my s4 for $150.

Love double tap, on the LG G4 it senses when it's in your pocket and won't wake the screen if it's getting bumped around like my LG G2 used to do.

I sometimes grab my Kindle to read at night and find myself trying to double tap it awake lol
