Due for an update, had the LG G2 which I loved till it bricked, now rocking a Lumia 520. I usually try and get the latest and greatest whenever my update cycles through, but with today's phone's being so good, I probably could've kept the G2 going for another year if it hadn't bricked. So now, I'm thinking of just going with older flagships vs dropping a few hundred on the latest.

The G3 is $0.01 with new contract, the S5 is $49.99 with new contract, both on amazon. I had an S2 before the G2 and never had any problems, the G2 kinda left a bad taste after it bricked, but I'm willing to give LG another shot, the phone was that good for me. So which is better? Or should I wait for the next big thing to come? Frankly the Lumia 520 is "working" but the small screen and lagginess of it is starting to drive me nuts. I don't really run custom ROMS but I do like to have the option so rooting will be a must. Thoughts?

I would go with a G3. Very easy phone to like. I would put it up against the best. Lollipop update is rolling out soon so you will soon enjoy the latest os. Good luck with your decision.

Love the physical design of the G3, but it's a regression in many ways compared to the G2.

Why get a carrier device at all? Nothing besides a recent flagship will recoup the big subsidy hit to your monthly.

Can you expand on the regression aspect?

Battery life much worse. Phone size grew too much for those that want a cell phone. So in terms of a phone it regressed in those two ways imo.
And noticeably worse contrast and brightness IIRC.

Over the 2 year life of the phone is the extra $150 for the Galaxy S6 going to matter much? That's an extra $6.25 a month.

Actually, I'm thinking of just going with a Note 4. As I understand it, root is not available, but messing around with it at the store last night, I really liked it.

WQHD waaaaaay to early. I don't even think the 2015 phones are really ready for it. Only reason I'd upgrade my g2 right now is for a better camera. Mostly the focus speed.

Yeah seriously. I have like the worst far sight of anyone I know, I wear super thick glasses and the strongest available contact lenses. A consequence of this, is that when I take my glasses off, I can see things up close EXTREMELY well. I can almost touch my arm to my nose and focus on single pores with ease. And YET I have to really struggle to make out a single pixel on a 1080p 5" phone and it really bums me out that the upcoming Galaxy S6 has upped resolution AND downsized battery. Sorry for derail btw
