thats why I've convinced everyone to get the LG G2, $190 brand new, can't beat the deal

That G2 is one of the best phones LG has made to-date, they just need a 64 Gb version or an SD slot...the battery life was so fantastic on it, it didn't need a removable.

I never tried an LG phone. I guess HTC and Samsung just seem so ubiquitous, never really considered it. I went S6 though and am very pleased. wifi browsing battery life needs work, other than that perfect phone.

Initial hands-on reviews make me think LG are kind of lost at the moment. As others have stated already, the G2 is a really nice phone especially for the price. The work LG did in Optimus G -> Nexus 4 -> G2 -> Nexus 5 was very promising, which rightfully earned LG today's high expectations when they introduce a new smartphone.

But I am afraid LG are at the risk of losing such reputations and opportunities they earned. LG could have built upon the successes of the earlier G-series phones and the Nexus phones, with a vision of what they believe a smartphone should be. Instead its zeal to catch up to and beat Samsung has taken up their smartphone design team (or management?), and the end results have been a disappoint after disappoint since the G3. QHD screen, curved designs, "premium" materials, etc. all seem half-hearted stabs at Samsung and give rise to the appearance of an also-ran.

Which reminds me of Samsung circa 2012~2013, but unfortunately for LG they do not have Samsung's market share and name recognition. And the market today is a lot more mature and competitive, which means they have a lot smaller margin of error.

It puzzles me why they thought it was a good idea to push QHD when it was clearly not ready with the G3, and now to mix the design elements of G Flex with the G4. The G2 and the G3 could be a one-handed device depending on individuals and usage patterns. It looks like they completely abandoned that with the G4. A 5.5" screen combined with an angular design takes the G4 toward phablet territory. And that means it has to compete with not only 5" smartphones but also with established phablets. It sits awkardly between regular, one-handed smartphones and larger, two-handed, and digitizer-supported phabelts. I think it loses on both fronts, unfortunately.

That's the theme I see from the G4. Too many good (but half-baked) ideas without clear vision, which ended up with a product with too many compromises.

Their reputation in this community is value phones. I think in six months this thing will be a secondhand value champion for people that care about the camera. No phone with a Qualcomm SoC is worth full price this part of this year, the G4 isn't too much more of a setback than the M9. The difference is the G4 will be like half the price or less by Halloween is history is a guide. We will love that as a value choice.

Who has them on sale usually, the carrier stores or elsewhere? I'm on prepaid (cricket, AT&T MVNO) and i might want to pick one up when the price drops.

It varies - you just need to keep an occasional eye on your favorite deal site. Amazon had the AT&T G3 on sale a couple months ago for $479 with $100 credit after several weeks for a total cost of $379.

The G2 has been available for practically everywhere for <$200 for a couple months.

^ And apparently it works on GSM networks according to user reviews. That is nearly an unbeatable deal.

That's a great point. The camera on the G4 does look good, except for when you have to use the flash:

"Similarly, indoor shots are quite comparable between the two, with only tiny wins for either here and there — the Galaxy S6, for example, seems better at ensuring that all images are focused properly, while the G4 churns out a teeny bit more detail. Unfortunately for the LG camp, as soon as flash becomes mandatory, it performs miserably in comparison — unlike the Galaxy S6's shots, the G4's come out poorly illuminated and with sickly, yellowing colors.

You'd think that the Galaxy S6 has this in the bag at this point, but you'd be skipping ahead, for the LG G4 is an amazing low-light performer. Not only are its photos better focused and plentiful of detail, but anti-noise algorithms smooth over the image with surgical precision — even when it's shooting at higher ISO than the S6. This puts the G4 in an awkward position, as it's definitely superior during the night, but its disappointing flash forces us to refrain from crowning it the ultimate Android low-light camera."

However, I really like the leather backs and it seems they start to fall apart at the edges very quickly. Unfortunate.

Basically this sounds like a good phone in 6-8 months from now when it goes on a big discount but at $600+, I don't think it's good enough. Plus, it's missing the quick charging option which is a big deal unless you are carrying a 2nd battery with you. I personally would rather take quick charging over a removable battery.

Well, to be fair GPU horse power matters most in 3D. Interfaces, bandwidth, display controller, and scaling/software are probably more important than raw GPU specs at handling high-res UI elements and web contents.

Reviewers are starting to show up and most of them comment on UI performance and display improvement over the G3.

What makes the g2 better than the g3 for a lot of people?

- Size- 5.2" is just perfect plus it has the one of the best body-screen ratio.
- Battery- Same battery size with a lower screen resolution. Do the math.
- Speed- I'm purely guessing here but the G3 has a barely faster SOC pushing more pixels.

I just got my G2 on Monday. Spent some time tinkering with it. I love it so much more than my iPhone 5s. Camera quality is great, battery life is ok (there are some problems across the board with Android 5.x right now), screen quality is fantastic and the phone fits nicely in my hand. Also the VZW G2 comes with wireless charging which is a very nice bonus. I bought a $10 wireless charger from Amazon and I have to admit that wireless charging is very convenient.

Does your GPS lock properly? That's my only issue with Verizon G2, all three I had tried wouldn't properly lock. It's a well known issue on XDA and no one seems to have a fix (people claim to have fixes but they are don't work for me). I had THREE LG G2s. Otherwise it's the perfect phone imo. I need GPS to work accurately, so I ultimately gave up and got a Note 3.

Hahahaha. I used the GPS the other day and ended up walking the opposite direction because I couldn't figure out which direction I was facing based on my Google Maps indicator.

Kind late to this party, but the problem with the G2 is the screen. I love the phone, but it's very fragile, and if it breaks in any way the phone becomes basically useless. Some phones will keep on trucking with cracked glass, but either the display or the digitizer will be useless if you drop the G2.

Also, the AT&T Lollipop update sucks. I haven't tried a reset yet, I've heard that can help, but right now the phone is slow and overall worse than it was with Kit Kat.

I need to replace this one again (second screen break in two years) and I'm not sure I can wait for the G4, the damn thing is practically unusable. Considering an HTC. I'm not really a fan of the Galaxy line. Decisions, decisions...
