Let's see what the price offering is and what kind of manufacturer incentives are being offered. I know with the S7/S7e you can potentially get Netflix and a Gear VR so that's like $200 of value. So it's essentially $600 (I assume Netflix subscriptions are the norm) and if you were going to get a Gear VR anyway it's about $500 for the phone.

The appealing thing about the G5 are the modules. I'm sure some enterprising 3rd party manufacturer will figure out a hot-swap battery cases. Bottom line, I'd bite if the price was $600 with some incentives (200gb microSD, an extra battery, and maybe their camera module).

I thought that was just a perk T-mobile was offering? Either way, LG has a lot going against it. The phone looks decent enough, but Samsung almost has a stranglehold on higher end Android phones. I'd say just looking at the perks you can get for buying a S7. But it may also depend on who is footing the bill for that one. Obviously Samsung for the Gear VR and $150 in software (still haven't said what it is), but the other stuff. Then again, I'm not interested in either and just want the 6P to drop in price

It is interesting, but the camera module is disappointing (unless it included like a decently thought out lens kit and/or special sensor, it just doesn't look very good for what it offers), and the other problem is you'll be stuck. What if I want to both have the advantages of the camera kit but also listen to high quality music? Simply put the audiophile part is there so they can bilk audiophiles (which I can't really fault them for it, but considering they found a way to include that in the V10 without a special module, I don't see why it is that necessary here, it should have been an internal thing that you add so you can always utilize it).

And, unfortunately it is LCD as well which means I won't even consider it. Sorry LG, AMOLED or nothing for me now unless it is in a budget phone. That goes double for a flagship or even sub-flagship (basically anything $500 or above).

I am very glad and want to commend LG for trying to innovate though. There's some interesting ideas here that I like and hope they can figure out a way to make them really worthwhile.

I can't get over how ugly it looks. And why do they keep going with the different colored bottom bezel.

I don't think it looks bad as people make it out to be, but that's subjective I suppose. Most people will put a case on it anyways, especially it have a metal build.

I have an LG G3, and was thinking I would likely buy an LG G5, until I saw the details.

I don't like the smaller screen, or the smaller battery, and I have no use at all for the weird add-ons.

Also the always-on functionality doesn't seem very useful to me, they claim it "only consumes 0.8% battery per hour", but that's actually quite a lot, 24*0.8 = 19% power drain per day, for a feature that is marginally useful at the most.

lol @ the concept of an "ugly" phone

Exterior looks has to be the bottom of the list for what I look for in a phone. Are there that many people that get hung up on that?
Core2slow's post sums it up nicely for me.

Is it that much to ask that these huge companies design things that perform well, have adequate stats AND look good? It's not like these things cost nothing. Many will carry them around for as much as several years. I'm personally not that excited to get something that looks like 2012 to me to be carrying still in 2017 or beyond.

That Chinese phone looks ultra-premium. It looks like something from a company that knows its stuff has to be GOOD to even get noticed. The LG looks to me like someone took a cheap prepaid sold in blisterwrap at Walmart and sized it up a bit. Or like a half-baked prototype. I'm sure it looks better in the real- but then I bet the Mate8 looks freakin' stellar in the real. It looks like something from a company that thinks "hey we've made it already, anything we do will work."

The mismatched top and bottom colors just look hideous to me. That overly-rounded look to me makes things look cheap, a bit juvenile even, as well as outdated.

Fantastic design, IMO.
I don't care about the "friends."
Replaceable battery in a metal unibody. Game changer. No excuses for Samsung for not having a replaceable battery anymore.

Unless that removable bottom piece works loose and your battery drops out all the time.

This is LG we are talking about.

Right, but if they got it right, it's a fantastic idea.
Samsung needs to get with the program.

Was it 8mm metal unibody? I think that's the new thing.
It would have been thicker than that, it was ages ago (2011ish, which is ages in phone years anyway). Same principle though, removable base and the battery pops out.

I think it's a good idea. In any case, phones are getting to the point where they aren't changing that much, so they should be usable for 3-4 years. Having replaceable battery is pretty important for that.

I imagine they don't want you to have a phone for 3-4 years so would use the battery failing as an excuse for nudging people to upgrade.

I'd take a larger battery (3600mAh in S7 Edge) over removable (2800mAh in the G5. And that generally is a constant tradeoff - having it removable means you use some some packaging. A large removable battery is the best of both worlds but the Note 4's 3300mAh battery was the last I recall.

Now the S6 erred on the wrong side IMO in having too small a non-removable battery. The S7 and especially the S7 Edge fall on the right side.

I wouldn't consider a non-removeable battery unless that was the only way phones came. Batteries are expendable parts. It's like buying a car with the spark plugs welded in. Plugs last longer than ever, but it's still a finite time, and well short of the rest of the parts.

You make it sound like the battery gets worse and worse over time, my nexus5 still has identical battery life after almost two and a half years, maybe after 5 years i'll see some degradation but im not planning of keeping it that long.

Btw are there any specs on both of the camera's sensor size in the g5?

I definitely notice on phones with decent to good battery life. The Nexus 5 has such poor battery life that natural variations of battery drain easily mask the issue.

This picture right here said it all....FUGLY !!!
Closer look, what the hell are all the ugly black lines all around the screen. Give the impression that it has thin side bezels but it does not. I've only seen cheap phones that does this with the black lines.
The back is just plain ugly. Just because its metal, doesn't mean it looks good.
LG has really regressed since the G2.

Exactly. Overly round and mismatched colors? Who the hell thought that was a good idea? It looks like a phone from 5 years ago.

It's not just a phone, it's a hand held computer that for many people is their primary and only computing device. And it costs half a grand. How it looks matters. If the price was ~$100 maybe I wouldn't care as much, but this is supposed to be a flagship phone, and yet it looks like a value phone.

I'm on the side that would pick a larger, non-replaceable battery than a smaller one that can be swapped. I don't want to carry spare batteries with me, nor do I want to carry accessories around either. This is going to flop big time.
