man am I the only one that thinks ICS/JB's on-screen buttons (replacement for hardware buttons) look stupid? phone on the right at the bottom-- looks way busy, the 3 large buttons clash with the 5 smaller launcher buttons.

im all for the on screen nav buttons, but if they want this to be the new standard, they need to seriously cut down on the extra bezel size on the bottom.

Comparing the SGS3 screen with my galaxy nexus, it looks much bigger because there arent on screen buttons.

Im sticking with my galaxy nexus until they can cram a 4.5-4.7 inch screen on a phone with almost no bezel.

On some apps, I often hit the home key and exit the app having to re-do what I was doing. It would be nice if I could disable the buttons with a slide tab like the 'hold' function on old walkman/discmans.

the rom in using now has this option. Im using paranoid android. you hold the power button and choose "expand desktop" and the buttons go away. Hold power again and press again to bring buttons back.

I hate the on screen buttons personally, but if this is a new standard I'd like all Android phones to have this then. I enjoy the physical button my SGS2, and it's nice to have.

Plus if you have on screen buttons you effectively lose screen size. So people complain about bezel, but bezel offers you some aesthetics. The Galaxy Nexus is effectively a 4.4" device because of the buttons.

Ok so you can get ROMs that allow you to expand desktop or whatever with a power button. I don't think you can expect that to be everyone's solution especially if that's a clunky thing to consistently use. Furthermore when do the on screen buttons go away? Video. Cool. Small benefit.

And people need to get over this no bezel obsession. There's always going to be some bezel due to ergonomics and aesthetics.

I hate hardware buttons, they are a pain to use one handed and I keep pressing them by mistake. Software buttons are great because they're centered in the middle and are easy to reach, and they go away when I switch to full screen video which is perfect.

Yeah I like software buttons too, I wish Samsung and HTC had adopted them on their newest phones but it seems like Moto and Sony are the only ones going that route so far.

The reviews for the optimus g are making me tempted to pick one up for ATT but I'd still rather get a LG Nexus based off of it rather than be stuck with the garbage skin they have on it and waiting for updates. All the reviews I've seen so far say the display is really good and the verge was saying they actually liked the 8MP camera better ont he ATT version. If the same sensor is in the nexus version that would be nice, one thing that kept me away from the gnexus was the crappy camera.

Yea, but I'd buy that if it had good specs.
I wouldn't.
It doesn't even look like a phone that can stay flat.
A convex back? MicroUSB on the left side instead of the bottom? No volume rocker on the left side? A protruding camera?

I don't care how good the specs are, I would never get such a phone.

I agree w/ physical buttons, but that may just be because I'm used to them. I would probably be okay with the software buttons if they kept all 4 of them, but why did they get rid of search? I use that one more than most. Aside from being the easy tap to search google button, I also have the long press launch voice commands. There isn't a single hardware button I don't use so it boggles my mind why they took it away.

It's funny how since Siri Google's emphasized Google Voice Search. Since JB they've emphasized Google Now. Why the hell would you make it harder to search by removing that button? Plus Microsoft jumped on board with the search button being mandatory on Windows Phones....

And I have no idea why multitasking deserves a special button. The menu button and search buttons are more important. This is why I like Samsung's implementation of 3 buttons on the SGS2/3.

Double tap to search, long hold to multitask. The way Google did it flat out eliminated search and menu buttons.

Whatever they want to do I don't get why Google tries to reinvent the way buttons are used when the major phone manufacturers haven't gotten on board. HTC One X, SGS3, and GNex all have different "3 button" configurations. Purely idiotic.

The only thing I see in that picture is how much better Galaxy Nexus looks compared to iPhone 5. iPhone 5 is like skinny girl with zero chest and no butt. Proportion is all wrong.

The soft buttons on Galaxy Nexus rock. The phone looks so much cleaner because of it. I love how the soft buttons can change orientation from vertical, to horizontal, to disappearing if needed unlike the physical or hardware buttons.

No bezel is unrealistic to ask for to begin with because of cameras, sensors, microphones and speakers, ergonomics and practicality solidify that argument. Though there is lots of room for improvement. Looking at my Gnex I would like 5mm of bezel shaved off at the top, ~7mm at the bottom, all on the X axis off course. It could be done today if there was less focus on grabbing the "world's thinnest" title, as it is, it will take a few years.

A smartphone with a display accounting for ~90% of the front surface is what I would like.

agreed. Its very apparent when comparing the sgs3 next to the galaxy nexus.

If they want the on screen buttons, then they need to cut down the bezel space on the bottom a lot, because the SGS3 looks even bigger and nicer compared to the same screen on the nexus. Plus theres much less wasted space.

I prefer on screen buttons, but if the SGS3 were a nexus phone, then id pass on them in favor of more screen space.

Also i would just like to point out i hope they stay with the rounded corners on the new nexus phones. My gnex feels much better in the pocket than my smaller SGS2 (att version). Maybe the curved glass has something to do with it as well.

Yes, SGS3 is a step in the right direction, no space to put a logo on the front would mean a job well done IMO. Other devices did a good job either at bottom or top but never both. For example, my 2009 HD2 had very little bezel at the top. While I'm at it, the T-Mobile version was 2 mm taller than the Euro version. Since no explanation was ever given for this, I assume it's because T-Mobile wanted more space for their logo

I'm 6'6" and I can palm a basketball, I really have no issue with size, I just want more regardless whether I have a G1, GNex or even a Note 2. My Gnex clocks in at ~5.5" diagonally, expecting a 5.3" display within that frame is unreasonable but 5" shouldn't be. On the other hand, I heard people complain about the GNex being too big. I'm not claiming it would (have sold) sell massively if it were ~13 millimeters shorter but I firmly believe it would have been a better device.

How about comparing it to the actual iPhone homescreen (aka app drawer) and then asking which is busier?

For the record, I don't think it's busy at all. Having used a Galaxy Nexus for quite a while and now an S3, I really miss those soft buttons.
