LG Super Resolution+ how does it work? Looks wonderful!

Hello, so I got an LG display and tried this super resolution function for the first time in the menu. Internet browser looked weird and choppy, but then I started a game (Pillars of Eternity) and set super resolution to High. And omg, it's just so good! I can now clearly see every little movement of character animations and texture borders are so well pronounced, textures themselves are improved (less blurry). It's like sharpen and upscaling in one. Except there are white dots on some 'rounded' textures (like, a helmet) not sure why. Also in Thief Dark Project it was even more amazing. I look at some things like a distant wall or a pile of coins nearby and without super resolution they appeared blurred out compared to how well pronounced and clearly visible they look with super resolution.

The question is - is this some kind of a miracle function? Or is something wrong otherwise with my PC that some textures look more blurry than they should? How does the super resolution technology work? How do I make the 'white dots' disappear? The white dots look exactly like the artifacts of sharpen effect in movies, for example.

It's upscaling and sharpening. Assuming your PC is set to your monitors native resolution, it's not really designed for that.

Yes my monitor resolution is native at 1080 and that's what it was on both games as well.
But why does it look SO much better with this thing? I don't think I can play games without this function anymore. Textures look so much more pronounced, objects look sharp, animations look so damn live. Without this thing a combat situation in pillars of eternity looks like a blur. With this thing I can see hand movements etc much clearer. It's just too good to be true so I'm thinking maybe something is otherwise wrong with my PC that this function compensates for? Sharpness is almost at max on my display settings and resolution is at max native everywhere...
Also interesting: in Thief Dark Project textures are improved only if I stand in a distance from them (like at least 2 meters). If I look directly at a texture and switch SR+ on and off, there is absolutely no difference. If a texture is distant the difference is so huge that it's like watching a rendered texture vs "being rendered in progress" texture.

Assuming this is similar to dsr/vsr or setting a game to 200% resolution in settings (not many games have this though).

The value of a pixel that the gpu calculates is the value of an infinitely small point in the 3d space. It just looks in a certain direction, then whatever it encounters on that line ends up as the pixel.

With these "super resolution" things they usually do something like 2x the height and 2x the width, so every pixel on the real screen is the average of 4 virtual pixels, which is a better approximation of the image of the 3d game world.

Should be similar to running a very high level of antialiasing, not every game supports "real" aa(msaa) though.

edit: I googled it and looks like it's a sharpening postprocessing thing.
