lga775 motherboard replacement?

I think the motherboard in my brothers PC needs to be replaced.. I briefly looked on Newegg and didn't find anything that looked good, should I buy an older one used?

needs to support C2D E8400, 4x DDR2 800/1066, and one PCI-e x16. I just want something reliable, doesn't need to be able to overclock, but I don't know much about which motherboards are good or bad. could someone help me out?

I'd just get the cheapest one I could find, or talk brother into upgrading. The MSI looks OK, it supports two memory standards?

Lol, for about $120-ish he could be looking at an H81 and a Celeron G1840 with 4GB instead of crutching an old C2D along. So no, don't waste money on a nice LGA 775 board unless a used one pops up.

Edit: $126.97, to be precise. I just checked.

Well even a lowly G1840 will be 20-30% faster than the E8400, and then of course you get much better access to CPU upgrades and a much more modern platform with USB 3, SATA 6, etc.

wow, I'm way behind with tech then. never thought today's celeron would be better than this old e8400! that changes everything

Since Core2, Intel has had Nehalem, Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, and now Haswell. Each increment, while small, really adds up over four generations of CPU.

I am in a similar situation. Motherboard is almost dead so i am getting a new one.

I am going for the Gigabyte GA-G41M. It can accomodate both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. You might find that suitable.
