There were a lot of things in the early NFL that made it dangerous. For instance, once a player left the game, he couldn't go back in. They didn't wear pads like they do today. People rarely passed, so the game was in much closer quarters, etc...

This.

The problem with being large is that your Heart can't really grow in size. If you add 20% muscle (or fat for that matter) to your body, your heart can't grow accordingly, it just has to work harder to pump blood everywhere. year and years of that will cause a lot of strain.

Either get skinny or stay in awesome cardio shape (or better yet a combo of both) and you should live nice and long.

Actually we got some big fail at people getting the big picture.

I'm not a photographer.
I am.
And I still dont get the big picture.

If it was so rough they would quit. Obviously they care more about the money and the game.
Live fast, die young.
Or something to that effect.

I think it has more to do with their mentality. When young they could shovel 12,000 calories a day down their gizzard, the more the better, since they would gain size and invariably use all those calories building muscle mass, very important to the game.
Problem is they when do anything close to 12,000 calories while sitting on sofa and metabolism changes, muscle turns flaccid or just disappears, body can no longer use 12,000 cal, so it stores it in fat. Heart has to pump though that fat and recently clogged veins and arteries putting tremendous stress on the heart. Not noticing, because they have heart of horse from years of football, it's too late and catastrophic failure or heart disease occurs.

Also TRAIN hit it with heart does not really grown to maintain obesity it just has to work very hard.

Plus having your body process 12,000 calories a day, even if you use it, can't be good. There was some study where they halfved rats calories intake and they ended living a good amount longer.

If so, than a player with a 3.5 year career span will earn just under 2 million bucks. Roughly equivalent to a regular working Joe earning 50K over 40 years, but the NFLer get the $$ upfront an can do more with it.

taxes take most of it away.

I thought you were two five o?

so that would need a loss not a gain to make 230, right? Or am I missing something.

How old are you? HR goes down as you age but that's really good shape for less than about 35.

I've been on a 2 year weight gain frenzy. I'm around 250 now and looking to slowly add a little bit more weight in muscle.

I'm 26 years old.

Ah I see now. Nothing wrong with that. You're so young it's N/A- it's as you get older fat, sloth, and heart needs attention before it too late.

some of you have obviously never even picked up a football, much less played football

There are really two topics here - how much of a toll does playing in the NFL take on a body - and how much of the reason for the very low average life-expectancy comes from performance enhancing drug use? The mid 70's and early 80's were awash with steroids in the NFL, and once steroid testing starting, players shifted to other performance enhancing methods, none of which are exactly recommended to stay fit.

As for the idiot telling former NFL players to 'get out of McDonalds and into the gym' - do you feel better taking out your jealousy behind an internet post? Get a clue - NFL players have spent more time in the gym and no more about keeping in shape than you will ever hope to.

Yes there are some 'fat' NFL linemen, and there are some former NFL players who let themselves get out of shape - but they are the minority, not the majority.

A lot of lifting and eating for the last 2 years. I weighed 210 when I went to Iraq. I was down to 197 when I decided to take control and now I'm at 250. 275 is my long term goal now.

I'd absolutely love to show up to my first army active duty post as a "new" lieutenant in 3 years at 6'6" 275, wearing my 101st combat patch and some air assault and jump wings.

See how many new guy jokes I'd get.

Oh please, it's not a secret footballers are the least in shape of all the pro sports. Besides mass does not come from time in the gym. Even body builders will tell you too much time in the gym is bad for weight gain. Other than wide outs and corners, its pretty much bigger is better. Having an ass ton of muscle from protien loading and pumping massive amounts of weight doesnt mean your in shape, it just means your heavy and strong.

If the army is the same as the usmc, then cadets get E-5 pay, so no change for you there.

I'm teetering between Reserve and IRR right now, currently on an expired contract. "Free agent" I guess you could say. Just exporing some options til I figure out what to do come spring time.

Baseball is still a pro sport? Sorry, stopped paying attention during the '94 strike.

Yeah, that's my point. It's nothing like the modern game, it was closer to rugby if anything. To say that the American Football was so dangerous Ted was pushing to ban it is misleading as the game at the time was far more dangerous than the modern version.

I guess I just find it amusing, as I'm a big fan of rugby. And in the rugby forums whenever the two games are compared, they always say Teddy thought rugby was so dangerous he tried to ban it from the US. And here you are saying the exact opposite The reality is that both games were so totally different back then that compared to their modern games they aren't really the same game at all.
