Earlier this month, I got my typical crap raise of 2%, but my hospital does a yearly survey & does a market adjustment every once in a while, yearly the last two years, boss pulled me into her office today and she gave me a 10% raise on top of the 2%.

I asked her when she wanted me to detail her car & pick up her dry cleaning

<--Am now one of the highest paid nurses in the hospital, I make more than the next 2 levels of management with the OT I pull

Congrats! I'm sure you deserve it!

Your 12% raise is about 4X the rate of inflation, so you're getting ahead of the rest of the pack.

Funny as hell actually, I got verbally counseled this week, something about coming in late ~60% of the time, my immediate boss is a freaking idiot.

I looked at her & said, so when I get called in @ 1 am & go home at 3 am, would you like me to call you at 3am & tell you I'm going to be 10 minutes late for my regular shift?

She gave up

That's an "Office Space Moment" right there. I can't believe that you pulled that one off and I hope that you are not vocal about it at work. If so, then everyone will hate you. If not, then congrats.

Well, here's the thing, my immediate supervisor is a bipolar idiot.

We were discussing a personell issue this morning, one of my co workers is having some psych issues, and I was reminding my supervisor that what's been going on is an issue that should be reported to the state. I reminded her that I had a lot of experience as a psych nurse (4 years full time staff in a huge psych hospital, 1 of those years on a locked unit, and many years in the ER of a teaching hospital with an active psych unit, with a full time psych resident for the ER.) She tells me she has lots of psych experience too, and I asked her when & where???

She was referring to her 6 week psych rotation in school 16 years ago.

Give me a fucking break.

About a year & a half ago I just quit talking to her sorry ass for 2 months, got called in to her bosses office & was accused of ignoring her. I told them that I had no freaking idea how she was going to react to a given situation so I had decided to quit talking to her.

One of my greatest moments of insight happened a couple of years ago...

Moron patients used to really get under my skin & I had a hard time blowing off the idiots without letting them know I thought they were idiots.

That attitude got me in trouble more than once & I finally decided that if the patient was that goddamn ignorant that I couldn't out think them and make them feel like I was the best nurse they ever had, then I was dumber than they were for it to allow it to affect my job, income and my home life.

I  the miserable patients now, they send back surveys & shit & say I was the best nurse they ever had

Honestly, the nice patients greatly outnumber the jerks, but when you treat a jerk like someone you respect, they're so shocked because everyone treats them like a jerk, they stop being such assholes.

Do you mind sharing how much you make in a year, before and after overtime? Just like a ballpark range

Salary Grade Range: Minimum $21.00, Median $29.40, Maximum $37.80

I'm just a few % off the maximum, time & a half for my OT (around 550-600 hours est this year)

I get some other perks, like an hour of regular pay if they call me in, $2/hr on call (over 2000 hours on call this year so far) About a $700 bonus this month too...

I literally couldn't work this many hours if I had small children (or a life)

One of the few things they'll terminate you for is revealing your salary

Good for you! This attitude doesn't always work, but it helps many people deal with individuals suffering from low self esteem.

Yeah, and someone with a BS in engineering or name your profession still makes a hell of a lot more than me.

Tell you what, next time we have a take a dickhead to wok day, you can come along, help me wipe someone's ass one minute, hang/titrate a vasoactive drug, manage an airway of a fresh post op patient with obstructive sleep apnea, or code someone the next minute.

Also ask any professional you know, when they have a slow day at work, do they get sent home with no pay? Do their employers bring entire planeloads of scabs from overseas to work for less $ artificially reducing the supply demand curve? Does gasoline cost less for me or do I get special rates to heat & cool my home or reduced auto insurance? Do they have to work all day with no freaking break or lunch, feeling guilty to leave their patient's bedside because there isn't enough staff & have to figure out how to get the bathroom so they don't crap themselves and their patient doesn't freaking die while you're on the toilet? Do they get calls at 1am, have to show up at work within 1/2 hour or lose their job, turn around and show up at work at 7am and not screw up because you had 3 hours of sleep, and you hope to hell you can function & not kill someone accidentally, and then get told to wash your hands 500 times a day?

Bite me and I hope to hell you get taken care of by an underpaid sleep deprived nurse next time you're in the ER after a car wreck, heart attack, or alcohol poisoning and expect them to save your sorry ass.
