I got a very nice shareholders bonus at work yesterday and had some great ideas of how I could treat myself and my family to a holiday and maybe some toys.

Life had other thoughts. As I'm parking in our driveway after work, I see that a couple of the cedar shakes on the roof have come loose from the wind storm we had on Tuesday. Upon further inspection it doesn't look good and maybe a new roof will be needed. There goes a big chunk of the bonus.

After swearing for a few minutes, I decide to move on and go into the kitchen to cook dinner (my turn). I preheat our convection oven for some chicken wings, and after it started to warm up the combination microwave/convection oven shuts itself off. Damn, now it's as dead as Anna Nicole.

I had no idea that my house was directly connected to my bank account, but how else could the house know it was time to spend my money for me.

Last year I had the same thing happen. Got a nice bonus but it all went to pay for the repair and cleanup of a gray water leak under the house and consequent moving of the HVAC system to the attic.

I felt the same way imagining all the crazy ways I could have spent that money or at the very least mostly paid off one of our cars.

I talked to my insurance agent this morning, and he said that if the roof is in bad shape, they prorate the amount they will pay to repair the storm damage, and they definitely won't pay to replace the entire roof, so I am on the hook for probably 95% of the cost.
