***UPDATE 2***
I want everyone here to know how much Mrs. Ned and I appreciate your kind words. We're having a really tough time with this. I'm crying at work while I type this out... We'll never have children, so Coda was as close as we'll ever come.

Last night when we got home from the vet we started realizing how everything in our lives has some element of Coda in it. Mundane things - like how I have gotten in the habit of closing the toilet lid so she would never discover the magic fountain. Or how when the coffee pot timer beeps in the morning she used to start whining. Or how she won't greet me at the door with her plastic frog in her mouth anymore. Every day I would walk in the woods with her... I don't know how I'm going to be able to enjoy that anymore without her.

It's heartbreaking, but we knew from the day we got her as a puppy that we would face this day. She brought us so much joy for nearly 12 years. We'll move on, and we'll probably get another dog someday, but it's going to take some time.

Once again, my sincere thanks - it helps me and the wife much more than you may realize,
Dean

***UPDATE***
Coda is gone. Sure enough, she had stomach cancer. The wife & I have been blubbery messes all afternoon.

***original thread***
I just got a call from my wife.

My 12 year old dog has been real sick. It turns out she has some sort of stomach blockage. The vet is going to do exploratory surgery this afternoon. If it turns out to be cancer, I've given the order to put her down.

This dog is my baby. My wife & I got her right about the time we found out we couldn't have kids.

Me has a big big sad.

Sorry to hear it ... I'm not looking forward to that time with my pup ... wait, he's 8, not a pup anymore. Good luck man.

The pet is not supposed to go before the parent!! Dangit!
Sorry Ned. If she is sick, at least her pain will be gone soon. That's all I had for solace, at least the poor guy wasn't suffering anymore.

It's true I want my dog guarding my grave after I die.

Sorry to hear that, Ned. Hope it turns out to be fixable. Losing a beloved pet sucks.

If my wife's cocker spaniel gives out; the wife will be devastated.

He is already 12 and getting up in age/health. And has her wrapped around his paw.

The loss of my dog when I was a teenager hit me hard. He was with me from when I was five. It took me over twenty years before I got another dog and finally two years ago I did. Another white shepherd just like my childhood friend.

I hope it turns out to be nothing.

happened to my dog when i was around 9. he was stumbling around and throwing up - had been sick for a while. i called the vet who came by (my parents weren't home) and said it was some kind of tumour in his brain. I had to choose to have him put down since there wasn't any way of doing anything for him and this would at least save him any pain and fear

at least he wasn't alone and was being soothed by a familiar voice

Hopeing for the best. It always sucks losing a beloved dog.
I've always been more broken up over the passing of my dogs than any person.
