I have been shadowing Anandtech's forums as far back as I can remember, because I often find all the information I need by doing forum searches. So i have never been really compelled to post before today. I was searching for a distributed computing application that was actually useful, and stumbled across LifeMapper. Wow, now THATS a good idea. I was even happier to see Anandtech has a LifeMapper team, so torn between joining the Digital Darkroom and Anandtech I decided to join Anandtech cause I just love underdogs ;-)

Anyways enough of the crap why I finaly joined into these forums, can anyone give me some advice about LifeMapper? I currently have a P4 3.0 W/Hyperthreading. I am curious as to how effective would it be for me to run 2 instances of Lifemapper as compared to one? Will I slow myself down or speed it up? Thanks for any help.

Welcome Aboard FISHRULE

Glad to have you on the team

You will see an increase in production running 2 vs 1 and it won't cause any slowdowns (based on my exp with the cli version)

Are you running the gui or the cli? (the cli is faster)

I ran lifemapper as a service install on a 3.2 (2 instances).

I hope this helps

Mike

Well well...a very wise man you are indeed Ryan!!! Welcome to TA Lifemapper, great to have you crunching with us!

Lifemapper has one of the best behaved clients out there! The CLI is a lot faster than the GUI.
The CLI does a wu on my XP 2600 in <13min. It took the GUI exactly 45min to complete one wu and also the CPU usage stayed between 84-89% the whole time.

You'll find all the setup instructions here: http://ghr.sytes.net/Lifemapper/ With service installers for HT machines and all that cool stuff!

Stats are posted daily here on the AT forums by someone... For other great stats, visit Geoff's LM stats page here.

Welcome to [TA]Lifemapper!! :beer::beer:

I did it for 10.000 WUs and I really loved the cient, it never caused me any trouble. Just make sure you read the link amdxborg gave you and that you set both your instances to have 200 WUs cached and you'll have a good time with [TA]LM!

The client may be well behaved but what about the database?

LM was on the verge of being no more, but after today's news, the first in almost 2 months, it may be around for a while. I originally did LM and thought the cause was great, but got tired of no news, server problems, a key person left and while everyone wanted to believe it would survive, over 50% of the active crunchers left and it was obvious the end may be near. Also the lack of news from LM showed no support or appreciation for the members. How long will the funding last this time and will the administration be honest and communicate this time? I built machines specifically for LM and was very disappointed overall.

Hi Lifemappers,

We recently received news that we will be getting additional support for Lifemapper. We can now improve the performance and efficiency of the project and perhaps branch out in some new directions. We have not yet decided what changes will occur, but the process is in place now, and we are excited that Lifemapper will be infused with new life. We will be reviewing the many suggestions that we have received and once our direction is determined, we will work hard to create an architecture that is sustainable (good for software as well as the environment ).

Aside from our new directions, we are still in a transition period with our old architecture. We have not yet found a replacement for OldLM, a valuable asset to this project. The new support for our project should help in our search for an additional team member.

You can still be confident that your jobs are not getting lost. We are experiencing occasional database and server problems, but there is no data loss occurring. We are working to minimize the slowdowns and are making progress reworking some backend pipeline applications.

Thanks for all your support and patience. This had been a difficult time and we appreciate everything you do for us.

Aimee"

HEy guys, thanks for the help. I am running the CLI client. I already set the application priority to 64, and my cache too 200 for my laptop and desktop as the packets seem to get processed extremly quickly as other people have mentioned. I will try the Hyperthreading optimized client tonite. Thanks for the help guys.
