Yeah, a fairly intense, but very small cell went through here... It poured for like 5 minutes, lol.. And some of the lightning/thunder were less than 2 seconds a part.

And yeah, we get thunderstorms maybe twice a year here.. and they're modest compared to the T-storms seen in other parts of the country.

Thunderstorms are a treat for us.

No, but I hope people don't think I'm an attention whore for saying this, but my dad was struck in 05 from lightning and thankfully survived with no injuries. He was very lucky, unfortunately he didn't win the lottery ticket he bought though.

Geez, quit bragging about it.

Hehe, I mention it every now and then when I get a chance, it's a great way to start a conversation if it includes him in any way

does your father exhibit any superpowers? increased speed, electricity shooting out from his appendages, etc.?

We don't get many electrical storms here in Northern Kahleeforneeya...maybe a couple per year. I miss those big "Thunder-Boomers"...Grew up in lots of places where we'd have several every summer...BOOM...CRASH...FLASH!! Almost always good for getting the "signifigant other" to come snuggle for comfort...

Well, while he was struck, the electricity went from his shoulder through his hand and a huge bolt came from the tip of his hand in a horizontal manner and hit his friend who was next to him (he was pointing at him) and his friend fell backwards onto a bench completely frozen. My dad was conscious throughout this but couldn't imagine what happened, his hands turned a complete white, to purple I believe, and we're indian so we're brown to begin with.

Isn't he supposed to have super powers now? Like, is he an intellectual genius now?
Nothing crazy like that, I asked if he could remember things differently now (photographic memory) or if there's any changes, but nothing he's noticed.

For a little bit of time, he was still scared of lightning and his hand would shake when he heard thunder. He got tired of being scared so one day he drove out into an open field when there was a storm to prove to himself that he needs to get over this.

Besides that, there hadn't been any changes, but yeah, I was hoping for some kind of super mind powers

So the gf and I are sitting in our living room during a lightning storm. A bolt seemed to hit in the yard right outside the house - with a HUGE crack sound and a big flash and us feeling like we just got hit in the chest. It put us both on the floor. Scared the sh!t out of us - it really seemed to hit our house. Soon after people were spilling in the streets trying to figure out where it hit. I turned on the news and they said "a lightning bolt hit the portland metro area - you all probably saw it and everybody's riled up" or something like that. It's amazing how gnarly those things are that it hit the air above the area and the entire city hit the deck.

Anybody else in portland metro experience this?

Why the hell were you not outside watching it!!!?!?!?

That's where I would have been

It was pretty amazing. From my house, I could see the skies lighting up from Longview down to Sherwood. The news made it look like it should pass over our place, but it never got that close.

I was enjoying it, that is one thing I actually miss about SW PA weather - The thunderstorms were awesome.

Portland weather is so boring in comparison.

Should have seen the storm we had here in Plano about 2 days ago. A storm developed that was near stationary with alot of lightning. I'd say there were about 3 bolts that hit within 200 yds of the apartment judging by the flash and thunder.

You guys call what happened last night a strong thunderstorm?

Watching a Cat 1 Hurricane (Claudette) roll in from a 6th story apartment, now that is an awesome sight.

Hehe, you don't see them very often, do you? Severe storms are one of my two favorite things about summer, the other being the scorching heat.

Massive car crash is the best I can describe it too - like being in one. I'm in SE pdx (near clackamas) and it was so loud and sudden and powerful that the only analogy I can think of is being in a car wreck. Afterwards you can't remember the exact moment and don't know if it's because you blacked out or were so terrified that you forgot.

I've seen plenty of T&L before, and I am the type to go outside and watch, but this was totally different.

When i was living at my parents house still and we were still on dial up i decided to go online during a lightning storm in florida. The second the modem start to make its noises (you remember the dial up days) lightning hit straight down the window of my room (i was 3 ft from it) and the phone line. I heard the loudest bang i've ever heard and then what sounded like my monitor blowing up. I sat there for half a second thinking i was covered in glass from my monitor and then opened my eyes and saw the monitor was fine. I ran out of the room to the banister of the upstairs and my mom yelled "WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO"? I was shaking like crazy and said..i don't know. then i looked to down at the wall and saw the outlet there had been blown out of the wall which lead my eyes to the hall way i just ran through and saw it was covered in glass from the light bulbs from both the bathroom and the hallway yet i didn't have a single cut on my bare feet. I to this day remember that so vividly it still raises the hair on my back.

Where in Portland was it hitting? My GF and I were in SE off Hawthorne and there were 10-14 seconds between lightning and thunder, so we figured it was pretty far out.

Still watched though. Natural fireworks are the best.

Lived in Pensacola, FL my whole life and we had a really tall live oak tree that got struck by lightning on 5 different occasions before it finally had to be removed. It has burned out so many things around our house(stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, tvs, vcrs, sprinkler pumps and pipes), but hey, insurance is nice amiright? Now being in the house on the second floor right next to that tree when it hits is loud!

Are there a lot of thunderstorms there? We get that all of the time here on the Gulf Coast.

I had no idea that it was even raining last night. I was watching a movie on my PC with these awesome new noise-cancelling headphones I got. I thought the flashes of light illuminating my room were from the movie and I thought the rumbling I could almost kind of hear was from the movie as well.

Then I got up to go get another beer and the whole kitchen lit up and the house shook and it startled me
