That happened about the same distance from my house about a month ago. Blew the roots out from the ground of the tree it struck all over the street too. Now that 100 year old tree is shedding leaves like crazy

I have to get info on how this will affect the tree, technically it's just over the property line so it's my neighbors tree, as large as it is it wuld cost a lot of $$ to have it taken down if it starts to die. I could imagine that pine-boring insects might invade it now that a lot of the bark is gone. I think the fact that it was raining so hard when it hit it was why it chose the outside of the tree to find ground, sometimes it travels through the center and the sap boils causing the tree to split in half.

Supposedly only the outside part of a tree is actually alive, and carries water to the rest of the tree, so that part will always be wetter. At least that's what I heard.

You know what to do now:

get out there and carve a baseball bat out of that tree.

Had a friend who almost got hit.

He and his wife were washing the dishes when he noticed a thunderstorm rolling in. They had left the dog outside, so he ran out into the backyard to get the dog.

As he was running to get the dog he felt the hairs on his arm stand up and felt more than saw a bolt arc over his head and hit about 15ft away. Needless to say he dropped the dish towel he'd been holding and took off like a bat out of hell.

The thing was his wife saw this all happen in a reflection off the microwave. So she goes running outside while he's on the other side of the house.

All she finds is a charred area where the bolt hit and the dropped dish towel. She ended up thinking he'd been vaporized.

That's awesome!

I had my own close encounter (and the only one I've ever had) last night. It's almost kind of freaky in a way as all I saw was this bright flash of light come through my window followed by an immediate boom from the thunder. For a split second, I thought my power had gone out because of the very quick flash of light as everything had "gone dark".

When I lived in Chicago we were in the living room during a storm and heard a very loud BOOM. Went over to the bedroom window to see what was going on - the telephone pole 5 feet from our window was on fire. Not sure if it got hit or if something else got hit and the current ran through the wires?

30+ years as a volunteer firefighter we responded to a number of lightening caused house fires.

No two where the same, some made very little sense, but lightening ALWAYS has it's way, and will not be denied.

what part of FL? I'm in Tampa bay, we've had crazy lightening the past couple weeks.

Yeah we get a lot of that.

Have an oak tree the been blasted not long ago, in the neighbors yard on the border.

Lighting pretty much does what it wants to.

It's fairly rare we get strikes in town here but it happens. Not that long ago a tree in town did get hit and the house next to it burnt down since they were gone on vacation, sucks for the owners. This is why I hate leaving my house for extended periods. Basic stuff like that can be caught in time if you're home.

I think most of the trees in the forest are higher than most buildings so lightning tends to hit there first.
