lightning strike

My 1st computer I built 1 week ago is dead after a storm with a lighting strike to house.

amd 64 3200
1 gig 400 ram muskin
antec 350 power supply and case
MSI mobo ( i forget model k8 neo something)
maxtor 80 sata drive
ati ratheon 9800 pro
dvd burner

When I power up, the power llight on the front of the computer comes on , but no fan or hard drive or any sign of boot up. The system was protected by a new surge protector (belkin surgmaster). It also was a DSL without a protector and the strike may have come in backward via dsl modem-router-computer. The modem lights up but does not show a DSL signal, the router is wireless and not broadcasting to a laptop I have. The router lighs are on.

Some body walk me thru the diagnotics . I think replace power supply , then MOBO, etc. I was hoping there is a reset or fuse on the power supply or mobo , but I havent found one. Is there such a thing as a dsl surge protector?

time to check the warranty Belkin had on the surge protector to see if they cover this. =)

They say ship them the computer at your expense and they will decide to repair or not and with what parts , then they ship it back at your expense. I think it makes it pretty worthless unless you are will to losse your computer for a while and I would be surprised if they stood by the warranty.

i would think the motherboard would be the first thing to go out. try replacing just that?

But if the power supply fan does not start, doesn't that mean it is toast for sure?

The PSU only turns on if the motherboard tells it to.

If you had your DSL plugged into onboard Ethernet, and your DSL modem fried (ie, a hit on the phone line) you likely fried your motherboard. But it could also be the PSU. There's really no way to tell without replacing one and then the other (or both).

Well... you've already 'lost' your computer.

And they will stand by their warranty (assuming you actually had the system plugged into the surge protector -- although sometimes you also have to have protection for your cable/phone/DSL connection to qualify). Belkin's a big company, not some fly-by-night Internet startup.

And unplug your computer during lightning storms!

Really? They don't just give you money for the replacement? That's disappointing, and not the same impression that you get from just reading the ad copy on the package. Guess I'll have to read the fine print of some of my surge protectors more carefully.
