This could potentially be worth it just for the barrel lens distortion correction it provides.

LR4 comes out in a few weeks, that's why the price is going lower. I wouldn't be surprised if it drops below this price point also, but since LR4 is going to be $99 (assuming it follows the LR price point from before) and includes video editing now, so that's something to take in consideration on this. They've also added in new editing functions.

Probably. LR3 for $70 and then the LR4 upgrade will probably be the cheapest route then.

This is a full version which retails for $300, and the upgrade version traditionally costs $99. Unless there's deals on LR4 (and I'm not saying there won't be) this could be the cheapest route to get LR4.

Not sure, if you go look at the upgrade version of LR3, it states you need LR1 OR LR2 - maybe LR4 won't require the newest version.

They are different tools. However, I'd recommend picking up PSE (Photoshop Elements). I have fully licensed Photoshop 6 at home and then started using CS3 at work. I picked up CSE9 for like $50 and never ever open PS6 at home anymore and used it more than CS3 at the office...it loads faster than CS3 and did almost 100% of what I needed unless I was working on media to go to production printing. Even then it was just more of a sanity check than really having to do any tweaking.

Lightroom is focused on what you'd do in a darkroom more or less. Photoshop is focused on full image manipulation and especially going to print/commercial work on the non-Photoshop Essentials products.

I just downloaded Gimp for free and found tone curve and levels and am stoked, and it's free! I got version 2.6 easy to find with a google search.
