Like sequester, the shutdown is the compromise, and we enjoy lower spending meanwhile

At this point the budget negotiations have degenerated to nothing more than a face saving effort not to give into the other side. But like the sequester fight, the current status quo actually works against Obama. The GOP wants lower spending, the sequester gave it to them earlier and the shutdown is giving it to them now. To get increased spending (or at least not shutdown level spending) Obama is the one who needs to take action. So I hope this shutdown goes on for as long as possible - Obama is effectively on the side of lowered spending for as long as this goes on.

Do the people laid off get unemployment? If so, doesn't that take away from the savings (especially on the state side of things)?

Also, do they (laid off people) 'enjoy' the lower spending?

Funny how this process is playing out. The hysterics of the libs are not going to do anything. They can either come to the table, or the government slimdown will continue. Win win.

I don't see this ending unless Obama stoops to throw Republicans a bone. He's highly partisan and an extremely prideful man to boot...this may take a while. And when he finally does swallow his pride...I expect him to be incredibly pissed off that he was forced to offer a crumb from his table. Have we ever seen a President with worse leadership skills? Maybe Carter but in a different way.

Speaking of highly partisan, extremely prideful people:

http://washingtonexaminer.com/gop-s...ll-link-to-debt-ceiling-fight/article/2536750

“This is not just about Obamacare anymore,” centrist Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., said.

“We’re not going to be disrespected,” conservative Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., added. “We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.”

Not sure what your point is...Washington is full of highly partisan, extremely prideful people. I just happen to think that they're pretty bad qualities to have for such an important leadership position as POTUS.

Oh I also disagree with you on Obama's partisanship, although he does appear to be prideful. Obama has been one of the least partisan presidents I can think of.

Regardless, true leadership demands that he face the GOP down on this. If they want to negotiate changes to the ACA, the Keystone pipeline, etc, etc that's fine, but you don't get to do that by threatening the country. In later years you will thank Obama for doing this if he is successful.

No, people on unpaid furlough do not get unemployment.

It costs. It makes us (the country) look bad. This could force workers into bankruptcy. This will cost jobs. It will hit your retirement savings sooner or later. The trickle down effect "WILL" hit jobs and people you would never imagined, even some of us here. Most likely many of us here currently enjoying the shock and awe, until that shock and awe hits home.
If you have a kid that attends head-start, someone must stay home with the kid(s). And how long can mom or dad stay off work until they are replaced?
Democrats and liberals are not the only people that understand this. Not the only ones that are mad over this. Plenty of republicans have government jobs, kids in head-start, and do on and so on.

Bottom line is simple.
At this point the house has the votes to pass a clean bill and reopen the government.
But the speaker refused to allow a vote.
THAT is the core basics here, the bottom line.
There are enough house republicans to pass this. Today. Now.
So you tell me Obama is somehow the one in the crosshairs?
Wishful thinking.

Spending is not much lower and much will be retroactively paid.

I think the shutdown is hilarious. I want it to continue just for lawlz. However, I also think it is funny how wrong the GOP is on this. If Obama is smart he won't blink, and instead he will crush Boehner into a corner. Public sentiment blames GOP on this more than dems and they are correct. Even if you hate obamacare it is the law, passed undeniably in a legal fashion, and vetted by SCOTUS. Sucks to lose but when you lose you lose. GOP is now holding the country hostage. This could end up as one of Boner's biggest mistakes.

At the end of the day I love watching Washington own itself but boner is at the biggest eat risk of it right now.

They could be required to pay it back. I was declined unemployment for 1 week in KY for something that I drew over 2.5 years previously. Was audited and judged that my 'vacation' part of my severance counted for that week, even though I didn't receive the money for that week (received later just like this case).

Of course, they would need to be audited to see this though.

No more than private employees 'enjoy' the regulations and layoffs that government creates in their lives.

It will hopefully serve as a nice wakeup call to the citizens. Number one, both major parties are playing games and number two, life goes on without substantial federal government. if only we could slim down at the state level too...:hmm:
Time to vote libertarian!

Bottom line: The Repubs will pay for this just like they paid for it in the last elections.

Their only hope for surviving this uncontrollable death wish spiral of theirs is to gerrymander themselves into a state of plutocracy at the state level so they can keep sending their suicide bombers to Washington.

People love it when government shuts down (and gets into huge stalemates like the debt limit)....

It's not even republicans. It's A republican, John Boehner. The man is directly violating his oath by failing to fulfill his duties. Those duties are to submit the budget to the full chamber for an up or down vote, which his own fellow republicans would vote to pass. Even they know what a terrible idea this is. He should be removed as speaker at a bare minimum.
