My computer can not connect to my ATT DSL gateway. Although it is shown as connected in local area LAN, I could not get into the internet. I thought it was the system problem so that I had completed reinstall the whole operating system back to win xp sp1. However, it does not solve the issue. I uninstalled the network adapter a few times. still no luck. I can see the my private IP address and gateway info from local area connection. Is there anything I have to manually configure after reinstalling the whole system? Please Help!

are you using a router?

It is a 2Wire DSL Gateway from ATT.
tehc specs
LAN Interface - 4 port 10/100 Ethernet with Auto-crossover (RJ-45); 802.11g or high powered HyperG access point
ADSL Device configured for AT&T DSL services
Manufacturer - 2Wire
PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) gateway / pass-through
WAN Interface - ADSL (RJ-11)

have you unplugged the gateway and rebooted it? Are you able to ping the gateway?

how to ping the gateway?

I did turn off the gateway and rebooted it. still no connect activity. my wife and her brother's laptop is able to use internet via wireless connection.

start > run > cmd

then

type ipconfig to get connection

then type ping (whatever default gateway address is)

it will either say "request timed out" or "reply from (default gateway address)"

post back with what it does, that should be somewhat helpful

If you reinstalled windows and have no 3rd party firewall (i.e. Norton, mcafee etc..) then you need to check the PPPoE username and password inside of your modem.

To do that follow these steps:

Open Internet explorer -> go to http://192.168.1.254 -> go to broadband link at the top -> click advanced settings below the broadband link icon -> Enter your system password for the modem -> Check to see if your username and password boxes are filled out with your email address and password from AT&T.

Your modem is a DSL modem, so if you have reset the modem with the red reset button on the back of it, then you have cleared out your username and password authentication information which is needed to connect to the AT&T network.

If that is the case then we know some things here.

#1. The 2wire is not bad.
#2. A port on either the back of the computer could be bad, A port on the 2wire might be bad, or the ethernet cable itself might be bad.
#3. Computer is getting the IP address from 2wire gateway via DHCP, this means that the problem is most likely due to a 3rd party firewall blocking the connection (I see this all the time at the call center.) I would bet it's either that firewall blocking it or the drivers for the ethernet adapter.

I have used the network diagnoi\stics tool, it reported my motherboard's network adapter failed the test. So does it mean I need to replace my MB or get another network adapter to install on my MB?

Well.. I would certainly not spend a bunch of money on a new motherboard unless you want to upgrade.

I would just go out and buy a simple PCI ethernet card, or even a wireless USB adapter if you have a wireless network. It will be much cheaper for you to purchase an extra adapter.
