Lindows Releases Inexpensive Subnotebook

As of March 1st $799 will get you this Lindows 2.9lb subnotebook with a VIA C3 933MHz Processor, 256 megs ram and a 20 gig HD, a 12inch screen, USB 2.0, firewire and of course the Lindows OS. Pre-orders have already started.

I'd definitely be interested in having one of these, what are the odds that a different flavor of linux (or ever windows) could be installed instead?

Can this really be true? I have about 5 friends who own a laptop, and all the rest have desktops....what do you guys think?

Where did they get the price quotes for that comparison chart? Some computer magazine written in 2001?!? I can get either an IBM Thinkpad R series or a Dell Latitude with a much faster processor and a bigger hard drive for $949.

They are comparing their sub-notebook with other sub-notebooks. Dell's Latitude X200ultra-light actually starts at $1699.

Kinda doubt that VIA 933 chip would even perform on par with a P3-700. Plus, for 799 you know it has to skimp on parts and quality. Preordering this thing would not be a smart move.

Yes, recent sales have shown that since notebooks have become as affordable as desktops, their volumes are coming very close to DTs. Keep in mind that a lot of businesses these days don't bother even buying a desktop for employees- they just buy a laptop with a docking station.
