Is everyone using LinkedIn nowadays to find new developers and to be found?
Everyone I know has been hired off of their page on linkedin. I am wondering if the old way of doing things, job sites like careerbuilder are no longer used for developers.

I'm using LinkedIn to collect recruiter spam and endorsements from people I haven't worked with in ten years.

LinkedIn is horrible. In my previous job we had shit developers getting endorsements from people in the office who knew nothing about development and shouldn't even be able to give an endorsement about the topic. Just because they were friends and wanted to boost their abilities (to compensate for what they lacked.) It's like the 16 year old girl on Facebook who has 3000 friends. Yeah, sure... 3000 virtual friends means nothing. Just like the guy at my previous job who had "This guy is SQL endorsed by 30 non SQL users in the office."

I don't think that LinkedIn can replace the recruiting agencies or the websites. It's "assumed" that it's a place for professionals and professionals speak 'truth' but recommendations may lie -- a real interview process can not be replaced by something of this sort. One, who cares about his/her firm, has to have a good interview process (online/offline) in place - you can't simply pick up the person from LinkedIn, just like that.

I don't know a single developer who has anything but hatred for the spam they get on LinkedIn.

On the whole, I actually like LinkedIn. You do need to change your settings if you want to avoid the spam; it's pretty easy to do. Right now, I only get notifications if I have an inmail, or an occasional one that tells me who's been peeping at my profile.

Really?

I get a lot of serious offers for both programming and network engineering, most of them require relocation though which I am not open to at this time.

I haven't gotten a lot of spam, nor endorsements from people that don't know my work.

Ah I'm being facetious to some extent. Not about the endorsement thing. I've been endorsed for specific skills by relatives I never even worked with, not to mention being endorsed for current skills by people I worked with ten years ago. It has to be viewed as a completely useless mechanism.

Recruiter-wise, I get five or six emails a day, and probably five a week via LinkedIn. I don't really mind any more than I mind any of the other spam I get.

lol, this.

LinkedIn isn't that useful unless you have connections to someone at the places you're applying for. Only reason it becomes useful then is "oh, we have mutual connections. He knows Bob in Accounting. Interesting. I wonder what Bob would have to say." Guy maybe go asks Bob and Bob is like, "Oh yeah, that's my nephew Jimmy! He's great. Real go-getter, ya know?"

That's about the extent of it.

Trident, you have not been in the job market long enough for it to be useful to you.

Connections are what most things are all about.

It's indeed who you know rather than what you know most of the time.
