I recently purchased the linksys after MUCH research. This router is kick ass. I have had NO problems at all. Games work, ICQ, Napster, Imesh, Dialpad...just to name a few...all work from behind it with no problems. I did NOT even have to play with any settings!! This thing is great...and it looks sharp also!

I feel like a fool!

I got the SMC Barricade (which worked great and I did utilize the print server) Unfortunately, I could not stand all the wires coming out from around the unit. It is an ugly unit.

I too did the staples thing and ordered the Linksys.

If SMC had the design of the Linksys, and kept the features of the barricade, it would probably beat both linksys and Netgear in sales handsdown.

i read something somewhere about data corruption probs with the befsr41. . .you can get the netgear314 for $86 shipped. . .
pricematch the unit at staples with the one from amazon for 109 shipped . . .after that, use a coupon code for 25 off 100 or more, and you have it. . .

BTW, how is the netgear314 vs the linksys befsr41 in ease of setup for 2 comps sharing 1 broadband stream?

*edit*
and IMPULSE:

please change your profile. . .that's not cool . . .

Will this router be faster than software such as wingate? And is it easy to set up, if you have to use a "dial-up" software, i.e. Enternet 300?

for those of u who pricematched this at staples...

how much did they charge you for shipping? did they charge overnight shipping? I've had bad luck running into CSR's that keep charging me overnight shipping.

Hi there people: After read all the review at practicallynetworked.com, the fastest router/switch is the Netgear RT314, follow by the SMC and Linksys being slowest. Feature wise nothing can beat the SMC but lots of people report problem getting print server running. For me, Netgear is the way to go.

I have both of them sitting right here on my desk. I got the Netgear but had all sorts of problems with it when using my works VPN software (otherwise it ran fine).
I then got the LinkSYs to try it out... the VPN is much better on it!

As far as speed goes, I couldn't tell a difference. I can get about 3.5 to 4Mbits transfers from my ISPs public FTP site with both of them... virtually no difference. If you don't need anything faster than that... then you shouldn't even be worried about the speed because they will all be fast enough.

Now, which one do I take back. I got the NetGear for $86 shipped and bought the LinkSYs at CompUsa... maybe they both go back and I order the Linksys from staples for 80 something.

I never had any problems with data corruption...and either did the 4 other friends I have running it. Setting up multiple computers is not a problem either. As for the speed...well maybe the Netgear is faster...who cares? Do you really think you will use that speed with your 1.5Mbps or whatever cable modem? It doesnt come close to pushing the router to the max. I have run multiple speed tests on this router and the numbers were identical to before the linksys router.

I am sure the netgear one is fine also. Different routers will work differently for people. But they all beat any software based crap.

Hi people:

I had used a Linksys and I do say that its web interface is far more intuitive then the Netgear. As for speed, I feel the Netgear is snappier, and my cable modem do max out the Linksys cause I can get 0.5Mbyte/s if I really try (late at nite of course), but then, my TV signal get noises and I don't like that. =P

Wait, if you download stuff at high speeds, your normal cable tv's reception gets messed up? I didn't know that. I thought they were like, two separate things.

I would think so too, one is analog and one is digital but it does happen, I can hear a faint buzzing noise on my TV when I am stressing my download to the max

This is a good deal, if you will only be using your router for sharing the web, email, etc, this router works great. Relatively easy to use, and few problems for the above-mentioned services. You can do some gaming on it, but running a game server has proved to be a problem, so if that is your intent, go with another brand. I will be running such a server, so I will be selling my Linksys and getting a maxgate.

. ..yeah, but the netgear rt314 is soo. . .anal . . .its just so damn nice. ..know why?. . .
the linksys is big, round. . .you cant put anything on top of it. . .or under it if your cable modem is round at the top (3com) . . .the netgear is flat on all sides, and it is thin as heeeeeell . . .
got mine in 1 1/2 days, set it up in about a minute 30, 4 mins if you include upgrading the firmware . . .now, all i have to do is configure the firewall . . .

Staples used to be "suck" as far as online coupons were concerned.

Are they more lenient with them these days? I need VPN access to my work and I hear this is the unit to get but I want to make sure Staples isn't going to backcharge me $30 using a 'bogus' coupon code.

Lastly, should I call them and place the order with the pricematch and coupon, or is there a preferred method to deal with Staples (like order online then call later to pricematch).

I second probe's question. Is it best to place the order online and then get the price match so you don't have to deal with the CSRs million questions?
