Linksys or 3Com Switch???

Hey Everyone,

Just curious what you would prefer....an 8-port 3Com or Linksys switch? The prices are similar, features look similar, I've worked with Linksys, but no personal experience with 3Com.

So what would you pick?

Personally: the cheapest one =)

Basic 5/8 port switches have become such a comodity item now that there is almost no difference whatsoever between them, especially if you're just using it as a home switch. I personally have a 5-port Linksys (fairly old one), and it just works and I'd expect as much from 3com. The only thing I'd stay away from is complete off-brands (something like this) just from being afraid the thing won't work after a few weeks.

Linksys - Toyota

Of course, I've never owned a 3Com switch other than using them massively at work. In terms of performance, I would not suspect any notable differences between the two (Toyota Camry V6 drives just as good as Lexus ES300). If the price/feature are all equal, I would choose the 3Com switch since I've owned every other brand except 3Com.

What are you using it for? There is usually a pretty good price difference unless 3com has come out with some cheaper switches that I just haven't seen yet. Typically the linksys will be a very bare bones get the job done and nothing more kind of thing. The 3com will usually be more expensive but offer management features. If you're just setting this up in your houes get the cheap one. If you're using it for a business and can make use of the management features, get it.

i love my linksys. never had an issue. firmware is a piece of cake to update. easy to configure as well.

I like netgear switches... the only bad thing is you have to plug the cable in the front...

my advice, if you can get the 3com within a $20 difference from the linksys, why not go for it. 3coms are damn good, but I've noticed our school using more d-link switches also...

There's more out there than 3com and linksys...

But if you're stuck between just those 2, perhaps just get the linksys because with 8 people there wont be that many users/bandwidth

Honestly the 3Com is pointless to get. Yes its great quality but so is the Linksys. As for Switchs Linksys and 3Com make the best. D-link is a company you want to stay away from. Lots of problems. But get the Linksys; for the price you cant beat it and you wont see any difference in speed between it and the 3com. I got the 8+1 linksys switch running my network and its great. The 1 port is a gigabit port which is great. I run the server off it with my 3com gigabit adapter and i have no bottleneck at all. Awesome switch and i got it for 120 US. If you wanted a 3com like that youll pay double or more.

If you were picking out NICS id say 3com any day. They make the best NIC on the market.

Linksys is good stuff. I always have stuck with them. Rarely have problems with their products and their customer service when I do have problems has always been outstanding.

3com is just as good as far as quality or their products but I think Linksys wins my vote because of their great CS.

Linksys - Kia

If their the same price, hell even if 3com is double the price, buy the 3com...
