Hi folks,

I'm looking for a better replacement for my D-Link router. This time, it's either gonna be a Linksys or Netgear as I found a *BETA* chip in my D-Link router (DI-704P). I'm looking at Linksys BEFW11S4 or Netgear MR814 (can't get any .11g routers here... Blech). Anyone kind enuf to provide me with some feedback on the reliability of each brand?

Thanks!

Linksys, I've had 2 wireless netgear routers die on me, one in 30 hours and the other in 1.

OMG. That's bad. But Netgear stuff sure are cheap Will keep that in mind when purchasing the router. BTW, I've read that Linksys routers have a lot of security holes. Have you had any break-ins b4?

IMO, neither.

I've never had good experiences with D-Link/Netgear/Linksys.

I would get 3Com/US Robotics personally.

3Com/USR is out as they're too expensive.

The new Linksys models that run Linux are much better in my experience. It's much more stable then old Linksys models I have dealt with.

I would *love* to get one of the newer ones. Too bad Linksys doesn't bring them in here as .11g hasn't been approved as a standard here

Yes, I can get it from Singapore, but it's the warranty I'm afraid of. So I'll just stick to .11b FTTB.

I've read the user reviews of the BEFW router as well. Doesn't seem to good, but it seems the new firmware solves lots of the problems. A friend of mine has been using one of those for quite a while and has no probs with it.

ARGH... Decision, decision, decision...

I have had two different BEFW11S4 routers from Linksys. At college, it wouldn't even work, so I went through Linksys tech support for weeks until finally I just asked for a Wireless router and got rid of the features I really wanted, but didn't really need at college. Now, the one at home randomly decided to lock up and the only way to fix it is to power-cycle it. The "new" firmware was supposed to fix this problem months ago...

Bottom line is I'm looking for a brand that's NOT Linksys to deal with for a new router.

Netgear or D-Link then.

I have a Linksys and I love it. It works great.

I had a netgear... That thing was a major pain in the butt. It had a security feature, "IP Loopback" which basically denies you from being able to access yourself from going outside of the network. It is suppose to prevent abuse of people spoofing your IP address. But if you host a website, you can't goto www.site.com from the machine that hosts it. I called netgear, complained. They said it can't be disabled. Recommended I get third party drivers, I asked where can I get them, They said they don't know.

Thanks for the feedback folks. After all the headache, I bought myself a Linksys. Hasn't done anything stupid so far and it's stable. Upgraded to the latest firmware the moment I got it and am now posting wirelessly from it. One thing I miss is the ability to update the dyndns entry which the D-Link router had the feature built-in. Any idea how this can be done?

Got the BEFW11S4. No WRT54G in Malaysia at all. Don't see the option there though.
