Linksys router and FTP server question

Has anyone using the Linksys BEFSR41 router been able to setup a FTP server without setting the computer as the DMZ host? I am trying to setup an ftp server using Serv-U so my sister can download some files from my computer instead of me emailing them all to her but I'm not having any luck. I forwarded port 21 to my computer but that didn't work. Do I need to forward more than just port 21 or do I just need to set the computer up as the DMZ host?

Serv-U showed her as being logged on but all she gets is the "There was no response from the server" error message.

Hey spencer.. I had the same problem,
I've got the same router.. the only way i've got it to work is to disable DHCP and put my computer into the DMZ mode and foward the port needed for serv-u

I posted this in another thread...

you do not need to enable DMZ

For the server apps/games you wish to host, define the port(s) used and setup port forwarding on the Linksys.

For Q3 for example, you can sue the default port (27960?) or define another port (within the game) for it to use. Go to the Linksys adn under Port Forwarding, add the port number for the game (27960 in this case) and the IP Address of the server to which the packets are forwarded.

Whe you setup your FTP server, you may do the same.

For the most part, Port forwarding is only needed for the "Server" apps... all client calls will still take place without this defined. So forinstance, you could join any Q3 game on any port out on the internet, but to host your own server, you need to tell the Linksys router that it can forward those requests to your server.

Is there a way to put on port forwarding with DHCP too? I really need DHCP but would like port forwarding.

Port forwarding will still work with DHCP. However... that's only if that client continually uses the same IP.

On a home network of 3 or 4 systems, DHCP does not really offer you a whole except some convenience in configration of the clients. Typcially your workstations stay online all the time adn are unlikely to lose their DHCP assigned address. There is another thread in this forum that covers a little info on DHCP...

I think I do have DHCP enabled on my Linksys. This is because I have a system that I screw with... and it allows me to easily bring it on the network without remembering what IP it should use. And... I run an ftp server on another machine with port forwarding enabled... but that machine is pretty much running 24/7 and has had the same address for months.

enable or disable DHCP on a small home network, it will make little practical difference and for the most part will be transparent to you.

Spiff,

On your ftp server, which ports did you forward? Just port 21 or did you have to forward some other ports?

provided you are using the default ftp port of 21, then that is the only port you need to forward... you have to tell it to forward to a specific ip on the local network (your ftp server)

I forwarded port 21 to ip 192.168.1.2 which is the ip address of the computer running Serv-U. What OS and ftp software are you running?

I'm having similar problems with a Dlink 701 and Serv U. I've got port 21 mapped to my server. I can login to the server and view files, but when I try to download a file it times out. This has to be some kind of configuration problem...

MOMO, please tell me what all ports you forwarded. Did you forward port 21 and port 109 or just port 109?

spencer.. you just need to foward the ports needed. Since you only need one port for serv-u, just use 21 by default. should be fine

Not sure if this helps or not. I use a Linux box as a router and not a LinkSys router, but the information still applies. FTP uses ports 21 for the control connection, and port 20 for data control connection. Then, it uses all ports >=1024 to actually send the data. This caused some problems setting up my routing and firewall but I eventually got it working. I'm not sure how you would set this up on a LinkSys router, but I hope the information helps.

I'm testing the router today, just got it and not sure if I wanna keep it. Win NT box gives me more flexibility, I think.

Anyway, no probs forwarding ports 21, 80 and 53 (FTP, HTTP, DNS) to the NT server (192.168.1.2).

However, if I forward 27960 to the NT server, people on the net CAN connect (I think) to my Q3 server running on it (192.168.1.2) but I CAN'T connect from my Win98 (192.168.1.3) to ANY Q3 server out there

I even tried to put my 98 in DMZ zone (which I don't really want) and I still can't.

I tried the opposite also, put NT in DMZ and forward 27960 to my Win98, and now no one can connect to my Q3 server

When I had WinGate running on the NT, and NT was doing IP forwarding for me, everything worked fine, all servers were running, I could play games, etc. I had ZoneAlarm on both.

I guess this Linksys Router is not for someone who likes to play games a lot. I haven't even tried Unreal and NFS-PU yet, but I think they won't work.

It looks like I will need to return the router and go back to software proxy solution

I've finally got Q3 srvr to work, but my friend was disconnected few times, not sure what happened.... FTP works, but seems slower though... or maybe I'm just tired ...
