Linksys Router and Sprint DSL

Got my DSL hooked up last night. Plugged in my new router and run into issues.

Linksys BEFSR41 V4 (4 port wired router). - factory settings.
Sprint DSL modem.
Windows XP
DHCP

IP 192.168.1.1

Wall jack to DSL modem. DSL modem to router (WAN/uplink). Router to computer.

I can access the router and have full functionality if it is connected only to my computer. Once connected to the DSL modem, the router vanishes.

Any attempt to access the router IP via a browser from my computer instead prompts for the DSL modem login.

Now the computer is still connected to the internet. I just cannot configure the router. Pinging the IP from the computer results in 100% packet loss. Port forwarding was set up on the router (before plugging it into the DSL modem) yet the router refuses to acknowledge the port forwarding and instead restricts my bandwidth to about 1-5% of what it should be.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

My guess is the Sprint modem and the router are trying to use the same IP. Connect to your router only, and tell it to use the IP 192.168.2.1, and to hand out IPs in the 2.x range.

Yeah, Sprint DSL "modems" are actually routers. One port, one PC routers.

Scott is right, change the router's IP to 192.168.2.1 since the Sprint box and it are trying to use the same IP (192.168.1.1).

We have Sprint DSL around here and I have many clients that have had the same situation.

Technically, the modem can be configured to act "dumb" and not route. I think they call it passthrough mode or something, but it's more of a pain and it often doesn't work right.

That was it. I reset the router to factory settings, shut everything down and power cycled the router and the DSL modem for a full minute each.

Powered up the modem. Waited until it was fully on.

Powered up the router. Waited until it was fully on.

Turned on the computer. Turned off the internet login account manager.

Accessed the router and reset the IP. Released and renewed the ip and then everything came back up.

Thanks.

Cheers.
