I just got a Linksys BEFS41 Router a few days ago, and I am having a problem with it. I wonder if you have this problem. I am using Windows 98 and Intel PRO 100+ ethernet cards. I am not using the Router's DHCP, but I have the same problem if I do use the router's DHCP. Instead, I set my IP's to a static IP and set the Gateway to the router. I then set the DNS to Timewarner's Roadrunner which is to 24.92.1.1 and 24.92.1.11. Roadrunner assigns me a dynamic IP. The problem is that every few hours I seem to loose connection to the router. I pinged all the addresses and the gateway checks ok, but when I ping the DNS server, I don't get anything. The only way to fix this is to restart my computers. I haven't called linksys yet, but I will when I have time. I hope I clarified enough and not confused anyone.

I have exactly the same router, NIC's, and OS as you. However, I'm a real novice at networking, so I can't do any deep thinkin' on this subject. Anyway, here's what I had to do:

In TCP/IP Properties: Enable DNS & add 2 hard server addresses + a host name (bub). Also a check on: Obtain IP address automatically. That's it. Everything else here left blank.

At the Linksys web site I have:
Router Name (my computer name)
PPPoE: Disable
LAN:
IP Address = 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
DHCP server = Enabled
IP Address = 24.17.xx.x
WAN:
IP Address = 24.27.xx.xx
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway = 24.27.xx.x
DNS = 24.14.xxx.xxx
24.14.xxx.xxx

Hope this is some help. (E-mail me for additional info)

I tried that way as well and have the same problem. I prefer not to use DHCP though. I used to have another computer using winroute pro 4 and that worked well. I wanted the router because I was turning the computer into a file/print/backup server and didn't want NAT running at it. I didn't want to build another computer cause space was limited so I got the router. This router is giving so much trouble since I got it. I will talk to Linksys soon and see what happens. I heard others having the same problem as me.

I have a linky and RR and I did not set the DNS boxes at all, left them at the default zeros. I checked the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and that's all on the setup page. I suspect that your putting in the DNS addresses is messing things up for you. Also I found that every so often (once in 6 days or so) RR changes IP addresses and you have to go to that setup page on the linky and press "apply", nothing else. It will then reset to the new IP address for the wan and you are home free. I also would use DHCP. I've found that none of the ip addresses of my lan has changed since they got assigned by the linky, even if I turn the pcs off and on lots of times. but I do leave the linky on all the time. At least, try using DHCP for a while, then you can change it to static, but at least you will make things easier for yourself to get started.

I've noticed that none of the addresses change on my systems either (currently 11 of them). I think the router must maintain them after assignment.
