Linksys router problem

Here's the scenario.I have a linksys BEFSR41 router,and so does my buddy.Why is it that in Aol instant messenger,we can't do any file transferring.We both were outside of the routers firewall and winXP's firewall.If I disconnected from the router and plugged straight into the computer from the cable modem,everything works.Very weird.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in AOL IM you can specify a port to use for file sharing(i'm not sure offhand what the default port is)...then you need to go into your router and enable port forwarding for that port...if you both do that, you should be good

your linksys manual should have instructions on working with port forwarding

basically, you're both behind "firewalls" effectively and need to get around them
