Ok, I just got the newest Linksys Cable/Router 4 port and would like to know how do I keep my machine from connecting to the internet when it starts up? My DSL isn't DHCP, rather PPPOE. I don't like the idea of my machince connecting every single time I start up.

You can enable connect on demand. There is a time out feature as well, if I remember correctly. The combination of the two should allow you to be disconnected when you aren't using the internet.

Why do you not wish to be connected all the time?

I have the same model of the Lynksys 4-port you do, only difference is it's a HUB and not a router (and somehow I ended up paying more, grrrr). Anyways, the ONLY time I ever disconnect my system from being connected is when I'm defragging.. so as rlism, I am too curious.

Well the reason is I don't like people here using the computer to download dumb stuff like chat progs and stuff. I checked the Connect On Demand feature and all it does is reconnect to your ISP if you've been disconnected. The timeout feature is just a feature that will let you set a number of idle minutes before it automatically disconnects.

Well, you could always go primitive, take the hub, and ethernet cables with you when you leave

My SMC Barricade has a web interface for changing your preferences. Within that you can manually connect/disconnect. Probably the Linksys has something similar.

The controls are behind a login/password so that should protect from whoever is trying to access.

Why don't you also put password protection on you computer and screen-saver?

I would suggest leaving the actual connection alone.

Internet works with TCP/IP.

You can release the TCP/IP, and no live Internet any more.

Put in your Startup file a batch file, that contain the line: C:\WINDOWS\WINIPCFG.EXE /release_all

This will disconnect the Internet during Windows StartUP without actually disconnecting the Router.

Make an other Batch file that contains the line: C:\WINDOWS\WINIPCFG.EXE /renew_all

This file will reconnect the Internet. Make an icon for this file in a location known to you.

When you double click on this batch file, it will resume the Internet connection.

BTW: DHCP, and PPPOE are not mutually exclusive, they can exist at the same time.
