Linksys router support Linux?

I have a linksys EtherFast DSL router. 2 PCs (both Win 98) are currently connected to the router. Both 2 PCs are working properly.

Now I have another PC with Linux-Mandrake 6.0. I tried to use "linuxconf" to setup the network card. I enabled the first adpator and checked "Dhcp", Net device=eth0, Kernel module=via_rhine as my network card is D-Link's; any other settings were left blank. When i activate the change, it gives me this error:

The command
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network reload
is taking longer than expected to complete.

If I reset the system, it will fail to obtain the ip information.

Do you know why my Linux is unable to communicate with the linksys router? Is there any setting that i should pay attention?

One more question about linuxconf. For the host name, it was originally set to "localhost.localdomain" Can i put any arbitrary name for domain name if the system is connected to linksys router and shares data with the other 2 win98 system?

the router shouldn't care what type of client is conencted. I'm unfamilar with Linux specifics, so I won't be able to assist in possible syntax issues...

for the other question, domain name should be the same as other clients, else you may have trouble talking to them if you refernce the hostname.

How can I check and change the domain name in Win98?
Is it same as "WORKGROUP" in network properties?

Thank you

if you're networking computers using peer to peer, there is no domain. if you're using a windows machine and you want them on the same network, you have to make sure that all computers have the same workgroup name.

VeryLittleJ,

I'm an absolute Linux newbie myself, but I do know that Linux works fine with the Linksys router. I have my Linux server, eight Linux nodes, and three Windows systems all connected to the net with mine (via a couple D-Link DSS-8+ switches). I'm running Mandrake 7 on the server, and Freesco on the nodes.

Which D-Link card do you have? Not all are via-rhine. I'm running the 530-TX's (a pair) in my server box, and this is the correct selection for them. BUT, the TX Plus card uses a different chipset and won't work on this setting.

Russ,

My network card is D-Link DFE-530TX. Is via-rhine driver the porper driver?

How do you setup your Linux? Could you talk about it in detail?
Thank you very much.

on the windows machines, you do not need to define the TCP/IP domain name (eg... mydomain.com). This is especially true if running DHCP. All that is defined for you.

The workgroup name is not the same as the TCP/IP domain, nor is it the same as the NT domain name.

VeryLittleJ,

Part of my setup is exactly what you did above. In that portion, I believe that you've done it correctly (must have, mine works).

Now, beyond that, I also went in to Name Server Specification, and checked "DNS is required for normal operation". Than I entered my ISP's primary and secondary DNS addresses. I did this before I did the other step.

But, as I said, I'm a complete Linux newbie myself, and I probably would have been up the creek if I'd encountered any REAL problems.

The specific nic card you guys use has different chips version thus requires diff. module. One is via_rhine other tulip. To setup the nic under linux you'd need the correct module.Switch to command line, and issue this cmd /sbin/modprobe via_rhine or tulip;whichever your nic uses, then you can type another cmd to confirm that the module is loaded use tail -f /var/log/messages.If all is working fine open your /etc/conf.modules or modules.conf file and add this line alias eth0 via_rhine to get the nic setup upon bootup. If all this is not working then read and get the source code from here http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html.Hope this helps.

PLBlaze,

No, he is using precisely the same card I am with the same chipset. I have two in the server box and both are setup as via_rhine and work perfectly.

then
insmod via_rhine <enter>
ifup ethX <enter> (where X is either eth0 or 1)

Then check to see if it is loaded with
lsmod <enter>

It should show a via_rhine in the list, then
ifconfig -a <enter>

does the eth0 show UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:XXXX METRIC:1?
If it doesnt then you have problems, try
cat /proc/pci <enter>

That will show everything connected to your PC that is recognized should be listed correctly if its working. You could try the TULIP if you wanted as well. As for assigning IP address's and setting everything make sure you have the Static non-routable or DHCP configured correctly, the Linux box as a LAN client should have an IP, the same netmask as the Win boxes (ie; 255.255.255.0) DNS and a gateway, the gateway should be the inside/internal/near side of the router, I swear its not hard, this box is win2K accessing the web via Linux IP Masq, its address is 192.168.1.5, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway is 192.168.1.1, and my ISP's DNS servers, easy easy stuff,
