I plan to get to a a service provider like Vontage or VoicePulse or Lingo .....
Is there still a benefit in getting this from a store? Or, should I just contact the service provider and register and have them ship the right adapter to me?

FW version is on the top right of the first screen and will be 2.x.x or 3.x.x.

Then, just follow the steps in the unlock thread. I'd make sure it was unlocked before taking it anywhere if you're going to rely on using it.

Thanks GTFan. Unfortunatly I won't have Internet access where I'm picking it up from until I'm out of the country. I think I've downloaded all the files I need to my laptop though so I'll give it a try standalone and see if I can get into the admin menu.

Hmmm... Do you know offhand if I'll be able to connect my laptop direct to the PAP2 with the supplied cable, or will I need to buy a crossover cable?

Thanks,

Ian

silly question, but with services like voipbuster, etc. can you hook up a fax machine and send faxes? on the box, it says you can hook up a fax but i don't know if it means only with vonage.

The supplied cable is straight-through. You can use it if you are using a hub/switch, but to connect your laptop directly to the PAP2 you need a crossover.

Thanks Dave. Might take my 10mbps mini-hub with me instead: no idea if they've even got a router where I'm going.

(shame this box isn't a router too: then I wouldn't need another box *and* it could implment qos to protect the voip traffic. Maybe one dayI won't need to carry all this crap with me when i travel! And don't get me started on power supplies!)

Rant over.

Thanks again.

I got my PAP2 unlocked from 3.1.3(LS) f/w. Tried out the 1 min free trial from sipdiscount.com and had problems whereby, I can call out and the person on the end of the line can hear me but I cannot hear them. Anyone have such issues?

Thanks,
John

Yes, voice one way, etc is common and is often the router blocking because STUN or REV PROXY has not done the its job or is not implemented. For trouble-shooting, try opening the router with DMZ to the device.
Ideally, the voip device can be made to work with no special settings of the router. But, some routers may be worst that others.

I have not seen this reported yet with VoiceBuster:

I try to call someone who does not accept blocked numbers, and even though I dial *82 (unblock) I can't get through. Is there a setting in the PAP2 for this that I've missed?

Thanks

I had exactly the same problem and solved it using GTFan's instruction on page 2. FW has the same instructions too. Some people can get by without using STUN server but some cannot.

Quote:

Line enable: yes
NAT mapping enable: yes
Proxy: stun.voipbuster.com
Use outbound proxy: yes
Outbound proxy: nat.voiptalk.com:5065
User ID: <your Voipbuster user ID>
Password: <your Voipbuster password>
Dialplan: (<:001>xxxxxxxxxx)

The links I posted in the second post still work fine. Scroll down and click the Free button to get to the download page.

I'm also experiencing the voice one way, I can't hear the person on the other end. I did set the PAP2 in the DMZ but that just gave me busy tone when I finish dialing. I have the Proxy and Out Bound Porxy set to sip.sipdiscount.com. I'm not sure what is meant by STUN or REV Proxy as I do not see those settings on the PAP2.

Any Advise?

Thanks

STUN server is set under the SIP tab (not the Line1/2 tabs). You might need to be in advanced mode

Make sure you don't forget to forward the RTP ports(16384-16482 by default on the pap2) or else you will get the onesided sound problems.

Another note... I made this an even hotter deal and got a Linksys WRT54G for $39.99 after rebates and put OpenWRT with asterisk on it. Free incoming and outgoing on the same line! woohoo!

ok, finally got my PAP2 working using sipdiscount. I had to swap out my Linksys 802.11b router to the LinkSys WRT54G (802.11g) router with no changes, not even port forwarding. The PAP2 I have:

Line 1 Setting:
Proxy: sip.sipdiscount.com
Enable Outbound Proxy: No
OutBound Proxy: (left this blank)

SIP Setting tab:
Enable STUN: Yes
STUN Server: stun.sipdiscount.com.

Works great now. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Does anyone know how to reset this thing back to the factory setting? Thx
--------------- Follow these steps to enable the Web page access to PAP2 ---

First keep the PAP2 adapter from accessing the Internetby unplugging your the cable modem. Pick up your phone and dial: ****Then dial 73738#Password is: (usually) 7756112# could be: 8995523#enter 1 to confirm press # Hang up pick up the phone and dial****then 7932#Password is: 78196365Press 1 to Confirm and then hang up. This just enabled the Web Interface if needed. Now if you need the IP address of your PAP2 Dial****Enter: 110# and put that number in your Web BrowserYou should gain access to the web server at this point.

i've been using my unlocked PAP with Voipbuster for month now and suddenly it stopped working. I still have .50 credit in boipbuster but no dial tone. ON the unit,
the light for the ethernet line and power are blue but not the ones for the phone lines anymore. i can access the unit using **** as well as the config/admin console through IP address w/o no problem. The set up on the config screen looks like nothing has been changed, i can see that i'm still using firmware 3.1.3LS but it says "Can't connect to login server".
Tried rebooting, disconnecting, waiting overnight but in vain. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well I finally sussed out how to unlock the device - just like most modifcations there is a lot of assumptions that you understand all of the programs that you need to use.

Those of you failing to achieve the unlocked state of the unit don't despair it's not your fault for following the instructions and not getting anywhere

Hint use the Sipura upgrade tool to find your IP address when doing the initial firmware upgrades and use that in conjunction with your PAP2 IP address when doing the TFTP transfers Otherwise you are NOT doing a firmware upgrade.

It took me around 4 hours of farting around to figure that one out!
