Is this the version that allows the DD-WRT firmware?

I have a no0b question. How much better is this thing's firewall when compared to a Microsoft MN-700. I'm thinking this might make a good gift.

depends which hardware revision it is. best thing to do is go through the stock at b&m and see if you can find one of the better versions

You have to install the small version of it. This router only has 8 meg of flash memory as opposed to the Linux based models with 16 meg.
Go for the WRT54GL if you want one that you can run full DD-WRT on.

16mb ram / 4mb flash


do you think this version would be better?

assuming its the latest version, it would have 200mhz 8mb ram / 2 mb flash

I've WRT54G v4 and I'm also looking for another 54G for AP/extender

I'm confused, doesn't version 1.0-4.0 of the wrt54g have 4 mb of flash memory which is the same as the wrt54gl versions?

No, the deal for $29 is correct. It will show up as $39 in your cart, but there is a $10 instant coupon that gets applied when you checkout. You do not have to buy the adapters to qualify.

WRT54Gv1-4 and the GL have 4MB flash/16MB RAM. Only models that had 8MB flash were the GSv1-3 (?).

WRT54Gv5-6 have 2MB flash (which is the problem - can't shove anything other than DD-WRT micro on it). Don't think that you can run anything other than the crappy stock VxWorks firmware on a v7.

Personally, I'd pass on this one since it's a crapshoot as to which model staples.com is going to send you. Might as well put that money toward a WRT54GL or a nice Buffalo router that you know for sure will run DD-WRT, Tomato, etc.

Good luck getting anything but the new version. The old versions have been gone probably at least a year.

i got the online price matched at the store and picked up a version6... there are instructions on how to flash wrt-micro on versions 5 and 6 so there's still hope for 3rd party firmware. This thing has really good range too, about 20% stronger signal than my old wifi B linsys setup.
