Linksys wireless router no longer carried at Office Depot?? Offering DI-614+ instead!!

I tried to get this deal on... and order on 9/17.
Linksys Wireless Router $79 + tax AR AC @ OfficeDepot 9/15-9/20

And got an order comfirmation that I would get it 9/20.
On 9/20 I check my order status online and it says "waiting to fill".

Today, 9/23, I call my local office depot and ask what's going on?
Manager tells me they no longer carry the Linksys wireless router... so as usual I get all pissy on her... but am still sorta calm.

She tells me she can give me it's Dlink equivalent which is a Dlink 614+ wireless router. (Which spec-wise seems better than the linksys... 22mbps vs 11mbps etc.).
She then tells me she'll cut off an extra $20.00 for the delay... and I thank her
Then while I'm surfing the Dlink website I find a $30 rebate which is valid till 9/30.
So here's what I scored... going to go pick it up tomorrow. She kept me one up at the counter with my info etc.

A Dlink 614+ (22mbps and 4 port 10/100) wireless router for $50.21 (See my amazing math below!! )

$100.21 (My total for the Linksys wireless router from OD online receipt)
-$ 20.00 (Manager discount for the delay)
-$ 10.00 (Mail-in rebate from Dlink website) Sorry... not $30 rebate... only $10.00

$ 70.21 Total for a router that sells for cheapest $112.00 on pricewatch and that's without shipping costs!!

If someone else got a better deal... oh well!!
But I hope those of you who didn't get your Linksys can benefit from this deal!!

EDIT: OK so that's not $30 mail in rebate ... it's only $10 I guess, because I am only getting the router.

EDIT: Office Depot online still has the Linksys router "in stock"... but according to the store manager they don't sell it anymore... weird

You wil like the D-Link WAAAYYY better than the Linksys. I had the Linksys and had nothing but problems with it from day one...took it back, got the 614+ and had it up and working in 10 minutes. Range is great, setup is easy and the rebate came pretty quick.

NOTE: To get the 22mbps you need the D-Link 650+ NIC, but it works with any wireless NIC card at 11mbps.

Hey thanks for the info... I was wondering about that claimed 22Mbps speed.

Will be looking for a hot deal on that dlink 650 card.

i actually got the linksys.


i get a little "network connection unplugged" errors all the time. i'm not even using the wireless portion of it yet. i think this will have to be replaced, since its a piece of junk.

As a bit of explanation for the router no longer being carried at OD: I was told the other day by a manager at a local OD that OD is dropping all Linksys products. He said that they (OD) had had very unpleasant business dealings with Linksys (no details provided) and that they were going to move out all remaining Linksys, then bring in D-Link, Siemens, and one other networking vendor (whose name escapes me at the moment). He guessed (but wasn't sure) that in a couple of weeks, any Linksys stuff left will be clearanced out.

Hmmm.....I've got one of the Linksys routers on the way and I for one will be cranky if that's not what shows up at my door. I have the wired version currently and it has been flawless. We shall see, I suppose.

Hey, my wired Linksys stuff works just fine. The wireless crap they send out has a 5 out of 10 failure rate...this from the Linksys tech I spoke with when I was trying to get it working. Hope you get a good one, but if not...go with D-Link...it is rock solid.

Same thing happened to me. I ordered online about a week ago for local pickup and the order went thru after check the local store's inventory. I got a call 2 days later saying they didn't carry it anymore. I was going to call back and talk with the manager, but I was about to order one online and the did a next day delivery. I was impressed.

Funny, I went through two D-Link 614+'s in less than a month. Both crapped out after about 2 weeks of use each. Got the Linksys and so far so good. The Dlink has a nice feature set, but I don't see anything missing w/ the Linksys. Time will tell I guess. And don't expect much extra performance from the 22 mbps. I had the router and a 650+ card and did not see any extra benefit. The Dlink is nice, but after researching into the problems I had with it I came across several people having the same problems (DHCP craps out). Good luck.

I have a linksys WAP (wireless access point) and so far its been pretty good. Was real easy to set up.

HOWEVER, from most of the stuff I've heard, the linksys wireless PC cards suck baaad. So do NOT pair a linksys WAP/ROUTER with a linksys PC card, unless you want sucky range

Yeah, keep in mind that with the 11mbps cards, the normal max you get is around 5.5 or so. When I say normal, I mean the real life transfer rate. Check out some reviews, in general the best transfer rates for wireless equipment when they are tested in reviews are about half the theoretical maximum.

Anyway, it doesn't generally matter for internet purposes, most DSL is rated 1.5mbps download max, so that's plenty of headroom. I mean how many here have 5+ mbps download speeds?

Now for inter-network file transfers, yeah you might hurt if you do a lot of those. But you should do those over a wired network anyway, much faster, and more secure.

I have two Linksys AP's and a wireless 4-port router. All have been sent back for dropping in and out. They did upgrade to "newer" versions of the same product and so far so good, but I don't buy Linksys anymore after finding out the hard way that their wireless PC cards suck.

I don't really care whether it's a Linksys or a D-link. In my opinion both are reputable company's. I just wanted to let you guys know about the deal I got... and how it might be HOT for some of you others who did not receive their Linksys wireless router.
Oh well... not going to drag this out anymore... BTW the DLink I got from Office Depot is working good!!

I have the router in my bedroom and my lappy is in the living room (About 25 feet distance... I think). Did some file transfers and the speed seems to be around 5-9mbps. I do not have the 22Mbps capable card in my lappy as yet.

I am satisfied with how my order worked out and am enjoying sitting on my couch writing code while watch MTV

I have the linksys wireless, and haven't had any problems with it at all. Guess I got lucky. As for the 22 Mbit on the Dlink, I remember reading that if any wireless client didn't support the 22, everything would drop to 11.
