Don't remember about the bestcircuit stores deal. All I can say is that it is hard with these because you don't know what hardware version you are getting. Personnally I don't like version 5 because you can't use 3rd party firmware/OS on them...

I am not suprised at all that someone has it cheaper than PC Connection as they aren't known for their low prices. There hasn't been a WRT54G deal thread in a while so I thought I would revive it. The rebate I printed is NOT valid at Amazon, Newegg, Buy.com or any other site that Corpun mentioned (only CDW, Tiger Direct, Global Computers, PC Connection, Mac Connection, PC Mall, OnSale.com, Zones, Mac Zones, Gateway, Dell). I guess there is another $15 Rebate floating around for other retailers?

I found a v6 WRTG54S at Office Max, for $59.99 IR/MIR. v6 and under can be upgraded to the custom firmware. The WRT54G all were the vXworks os which is not upgradeable.

The newer version-5 routers have smaller onboard memory, and therefore
cannot be used with various 3rd party firmware. Linksys is now marketing
the version-4 as a WRT54GL, but with a higher price tag and no rebates.
The L is for Linux. The official Linksys firmware for version 4 and below is
Linux-based, and this is what enabled all of the 3rd party firmware.

In addition, the initial version-5 firmware was a bit buggy, although I have
heard that newer versions are much improved.

I personally have a version-4 with DDWRT 3rd party firmware loaded. It has
a few cool features that I use. I have increased the wireless power, blocked my
son's computer from accessing some websites, and occasionally shut down the
internet connection to his computer when he fails to focus on his school work.

For most people who are OK with the standard set of features, a version-5 is
probably fine, assuming that they load the newest firmware from Linksys.

I meant with SpeedBoster. My laptop came with that so I might as well spend the extra $ for the "S". It is mostly going to be used for my son's Nintendo DS and to adda wireless network to our TIVO. Any forseeable problems with version 5 doing this?

Remember that the Speedbooster is only going to help when transferring information
between 2 computers on your local network. If you are downloading information
from the internet, your internet link is going to be the bottleneck. The fastest cable
speed that I have seen for home service is 10 Mbps for high-$ cable service. Most
people are slower than that. Someone probably has a connection faster than
10 Mbps, and will want to post and brag about it, but they are not going to be a typical
home user.

Even the old "B" standard routers did 11 Mbps, and I was still happy with my old "B" Netgear until it died a few months back. Standard "G" is 54 Mbps.

Of course, all these numbers, both internet and router, are theoretical maximums, and
not likely to be actually seen.

The Version 5 Linksys router should do fine your Nintendo DS and your Tivo.
One thing I don't like is that the DS can only deal with WEP security. I had
to back down to a lower level of security so my son can play Mario Kart on the
internet. All the thieves probably use my neighbor's wide-open cable connection, however, so not that big of deal.

The SpeedBooster might not be a good idea, since the DS usually requires that you run in mixed B and G mode on the router. Unless the SpeedBooster works with mixed mode, you'd be paying extra for a feature you'd need to turn off for the DS to work. I would also recommend checking www.nintendowifi.com for a list of compatible routers along with tips on router settings.

V5 routers are crap. I had one where portforwarding would NOT work at all. When it did the 3 times, it was temporary. I went out and got a dlink-524 instead and it actually works!

I need to do to my son exactly what your doing. The features your using are part of the DDWRT 3rd party firmware?

Actually, I'd like the ability to block specific sites and block all internet access based on a schedule (e.g. automatically turn off access for a specific system on the lan at 9:00pm Sun-thur, open on the weekend). Does the firmware you are running support this

You are unlucky. Never had problems with V5 myself.

Yes, the DDWRT firmware gives you the ability to:

1) Assign specific IP addresses to specific computers via the MAC address
2) Prevent specific IP addresses from accessing the internet
3) Block access to websites based upon URL or keyword
4) Block specific services, such as bittorrent or AIM.


All these access restrictions can be limited to specific IP addresses, specific
hours, and/or specific days. You can set up to 10 filters, and turn any of
the 10 filters on or off individually.

My son hates it. I can turn off his AIM via any computer in the house.
Using no-ip.com, I can even turn it off from the office.
