Thanks, it seems like they had quite a few at the local T-Mobile store, so I picked one up for $20.

Still not a bad idea to apply the DD-WRT. It should boost performance and reliability, and is pretty simple.

They have these in my area and I have a friend on T-mobile so the buying it as a gift worked like a charm. Would using this as an access point connecting to my existing Linksys router increase the signal strength for a computer located at the current edge of my range?

Yes, look up WDS.
Also note the DD-WRT firmware, or Tomato, allow for boosting the signal.
If you go too high you can fry the thing, but a small boost will give a better signal and will allow you to pass on a second router so give that a try.

Guys - see the input myself and others have posted. They are looking at the wrong router. Tell them it's not considered a phone, it is considered an accessory.

I told him it was an accessory and gave him the part #. He said yeah they're about $40, then I said they are supposed to be on clearance for $20. He went somewhere, came back and said yeah they are $20 but you need an account. That's when I said I am buying it as a gift for someone and he said as long as they have an account.

Perhaps I will try again later with a different associate.

reading the thread on slick deals shows that the tmobil stores are regionally owned and operated and that some regional managers are putting the kibosh on the sale of the routers without a contract.

Yeah you need to go to a corporate owned store if possible, as noted in my OP.

Yes, some of them are dicks. I printed out a map with the closest T-Mobile owned stores (not independent). I started calling and showed up once they confirmed that they had it in stock and they could sell it to me. The first one gave me crap about having to have a 2 year contract so I explained it was an accessory and the guy looked at me and looked at the manager. He had his direct orders and he couldn't bulge. The second and third store I went to did not have the Linksys model. Now when I arrived to the fourth store they had 9 in stock and they didn't think twice about selling them all to me. The pretty girl even helped me taking half of them over to my car since they did not have big bags. This was a couple of weeks ago and I still haven't had time to flash them. But the one I already have works like a champ with DD-WRT.

I went to one of my local corporate stores yesterday and asked about the router to buy as an accessory, but he wanted to sell me the "hotspot" one for $150 or whatever it is. I told him no it's the older blue one, and he said he didn't know anything about it and didn't really seem to understand there being anything but the expensive hotspot one. Oh well, maybe I'll try another one in my area and see if they have any.

How many do you have and what do you want for one? $30 shipped?

Ordered the same thing from"1saleaday" back in early January & just came in as the T-Mobile Linksys WRTU54G-TM Hi-Port. $19.99 + $4.99 shipping. It's not on the site now, but may come up again.

It was labeled wrong on the 1saleaday title when it was posted. The actual part number listed on that day was indeed the WRTU54G-TM, which is not (at this time) nearly as good as the WRT54G-TM router. The U version has more flash and more ram but cannot be flashed to a 3rd party firmware (at this time). Not a bad price for the router (refurbished also), but not nearly the router that the OP is listing in this one, IMO (and many other opinions also)!
