Haven't opened my yet either...in reading the specs on this on the Linksys site, I couldn't find anything about this having a firewall. It does have NAT, but the firewall would be more secure (someone correct if am wrong, but the NAT will simply show your ports as closed while a true firewall will actually stealth your ports. Is there a way to configure NAT to stealth your ports???)

No, the ports all show up as "stealthed" when I do a scan on my WRT54G. I believe a true firewall would basically be more flexible as to what to do with both inbound and outbound packets.

make sure you buy Linksys cards to go with this router, it the 802.11G Draft not true 802.11g. Not all 802.11g products are compatible at G rates. I bought the Linksys PC card and it works great with the router. 700mb transfer took 8 minutes on the 54G card vs 6 minutes over a 100Mb cable connection. This would take around an hour at 802.11b speeds.

I purchased the Proxim Orinoco GOld 11a/b/g combo card from buy.com @ like $86 shipped. Works excellent with this routher and is simply the best solution for wireless.

Just remember if you have a g network at home and you want to go to school or to a fiends house your stuck unless you get a combo card. and the Orinoco gold is simply the best.

I'm not sure if you are using the latest firmware version 1.30.7 because as of 1.30.1 the WRT54G complies to the 802.11G final standard. Here is some more info. So any PC card that have drivers that comply with the final 802.11g standard should have no problems with the router.

The 802.11g access point is a better deal cos you can hack the AP to 84mW transmit power. I get strong signal on mixed band with a connection shared from a different apartment building.

Still have not opened mine yet.

I just got Cable Broadband, and get 8 to 9 mbps when my cable is connected directly to my PC.

Now if I plug in the router to share the connection among multiple PCs..

Can this router handle that speed or will it undercut it???

well i have no question about a 1.5mbps connection... prob. not even 3.0 mbps...

but how about 8 or 9 mbps... just wondering if it can be found at what mbps does this unit max out on.

I would check out the forums at Dsl Reports, I am assuming you are with optimum online. I believe that is can handle it, I though the SMCs, Dlink and the Siemens could not handle it.

I'd like to know what the going rate is for 8-9 megabit per second cable connections are. It sounds like you guys have T1 connections.

just like the other member suspected, i have optimumonline. 29.95 first 6 months. it was just rolled out in my block. and i dont forsee other people really signing up and dragging down my bandwidth...

i will miss this speed if i ever move and cannot get it again heh heh... makes 500MB downloads finish really reasonably.
