Anyone know how reliable these puppies are? I would love to add another two or three drives to my computer, but I don't think my 300w Antec is going to handle it too well.

from their site "400W Total Power On +3.3V & +5V is 180W Max"

if you have a xp 1800 and lower then its for you, if you have faster cpus then i would suggest getting a better psu.

total watts don't mean anything if the +3.3V & +5V is low.

What would be the best PS for the best price?
The Linkworld 400W for $16 shipped, the L&C 350W AMD approved for $12+shipping ($19 shipped?), or the Leadman/Powmax 400W AMD approved for $19.99 shipped at buydirect.com?

Back when Dealsonic was selling the L&C 350W for $9, I bought 3 of them. I have one in my overclocked athlon machine that runs at Xp 2100 speed and its been good. I know people say the L&C suck but the one i got is pretty good. I ordered a refurb Sparkle 300W and the best it managed to do was keep the 5v line at 4.82v and the 3.3v at 3.23. I know the L&C is rated 50 watts higher and it may not be fair to compare but I get 5.0-5.03V and 3.3v out the L&C. Those were MBM 5 readings and i confirmed they were accurate with my multimeter. I am delighted because my machine doesn't randomly reboot anymore and I only paid $9 for it and it does better than the Sparkle did. It may not last as long as the Sparkle but I got three for the price of one Sparkle.

Interesting... so it's basically between the L&C and Leadman... any recommendations?

I would recommend the L&C because the output appears to be good but my only reservation would be long term reliability. I've seen a lot of swollen or blown capacitors coming out that fiasco with those cheap badly formulated capactitors that many companies were using in Taiwan. I opened up the no name made in Taiwan 300w ps i was using before i replaced it with the L&C and i noticed a swollen capacitor. I had it for maybe 6 months or so.Luckily, I replaced it otherwise i would have had to deal with a blown ps sooner or later. Out of all these cheap ps I like the L&C i got but i don't know how long it or the other cheap power supplies will last. Given these circumstances, I rather have the ps that at least works until it dies rather than have that doesn't work well and dies.

I had exactly one of the Linkworld 350W installed on my Aunties pc and it crapped out after a year. When opened, the huge caps was leaking and shorted the other components. Cheap, yes , reliable, don't know how long it will last. :disgust:

my $0.02..........

Psu like these are great for lower clocked amd chips. However if you ever consider overclocking or using higher end chips get something more reliable.

Anyone know what the minimum of power supply wattage on the +3.3v and +5v is needed to stablely OC an AMD Athelon 1600+ ? (e.g. would a 400W PS with max of 180W on the +3.3V & +5V be enough ?)

Thanks

Nothing against this P.S. but read up on that P.S. article on Tom's Hardware, it's very informative and well worth the reading. I eventually skipped this P.S. in favor of the Fortron FSP300-60ATV which is a.k.a Source or Sparkle. At a marketed 300w it puts out 200w on both 3.3 and 5v rails, also IIRC it actually puts out more than 300w max. It also has protection circuitry that shuts down the system if it's overloaded to protect your components.

However, if you're powering a low-mid end system and not thinking of OC i think the others mentioned in this group are fine.

You'd be amazed at what all these antec PS's can take. On a 350 I have 4 HD's, DVD R/W, CD R/W, CD ROM and an ATI all-in-wonder.

Can anyone recommend a PSU for a high-load system (4 HD's + full PCI slots + 2 optical drives + modern CPU)?

Thanks!

Just FYI the Antec 300 watt (PP-303X) is 160 watts total on the 3.3 and 5v. output.

I'd go with the Fortron. They're also known as Source or Sparkle.

Anyway, Tom's Hardware had a review of Power Supplies lately and the Fortron came up in the top 3 as the one with most features and providing the amount of power it's being rated at - if not more.

I have the 300w version and the 5v and 3.3v rail pumps out 200w, it's also pretty quiet and has built-in overload circuit protection. Not bad for a $27 piece of hardware.

think that can handle 2100+ xp cpu, 2 80gig hard drives, 2 optical drives, geforce4 ti4200, sound card, network card, tv tuner, and 2 sticks of ram?

Possibly, but I wouldnt even try. Esp with this psu. besides for all that eqip u got, u should at least get one with 200+ watts on the 3.3 and 5V rails

I am confused. That article says that the 12v rail is used for powering the CPU. Unless I have been misinformed by everyone on the planet, that is not true. they loose all credibility at that for not knowing that the CPU pulls from the 3.3 and 5v lines. Hell, there is only 1 12v wire on the ATX connector.

If they do not even know that, how am I going to trust them to not screw up the testing of anything, let alone a PWS?
