Linspire Launches World's Easiest Desktop Linux, Linspire Five-0

Expansive System-Wide Improvements Result in Practical, Affordable Operating System for Homes, Businesses and Schools

SAN DIEGO, March 16, 2005 - Linspire, Inc. today announced the release of its latest operating system, Linspire Five-0. More than a year in the making and with more than 1,200 improvements, the newest version of Linspire boasts enhancements in every core application and provides the most secure, reliable and easy-to-use desktop Linux experience available for home, business and school users. Highlights include a completely revised and streamlined graphical interface, improved laptop and hardware support, significant Internet optimization, and dozens of enhanced software applications to provide a complete user experience. The new Linspire Five-0 operating system is available immediately via digital download from www.linspire.com/buylinspire and will be available in more than 1,000 retail outlets later this month.

"For more than a year, we've analyzed and studied the user experience to create a Linux product suitable for the mass market," said Michael Robertson, CEO of Linspire, Inc. "Linspire Five-0 is so easy to use, it finally makes Linux practical for anyone - from a Fortune 500 executive to a kid researching a school essay."

Linspire Five-0 is a stable, secure Linux-based operating system that comes complete with major desktop applications, including OpenOffice.org (a Microsoft file-compatible office suite); Web browser, e-mail and instant messaging clients; multimedia viewers; photo and music managers; calendaring tools; and more. Access to additional software and applications is available through Linspire's innovative CNR ("click and run") Warehouse, a software library where users can download and install more than 2,000 Linux programs in seconds with just one mouse click. For more information about CNR, visit www.linspire.com/cnrservice.

Linspire Five-0 is effortless to install and update. A new install of the operating system typically takes under 10 minutes. Once installed, Linspire Five-0's new "total system update" feature provides update notifications for both the operating system and all installed software. Users may then update manually or choose to have CNR Technology install updates automatically anytime they are available. Furthermore, customers with earlier versions of Linspire can upgrade to Linspire Five-0 without losing any stored data. For more about Linspire Five-0, go to www.linspire.com/os.

I checked it out... It looks like typical AT ranting about stuff they know nothing about. If they're pc-competent and feel like they can take on Linux, then I have no problem with them checking out a free distro. But if they barely know how to get around windoze and have no idea what the dos prompt was, then Linspire is the alternative that they should try first.

I'm using Linspire right now and couldn't be happier. I've been test-driving it for a while now b/c I would love to get all my friends and family away from windoze. It's getting old having to fix everybody's windoze computer everytime I go to their house b/c of all the spyware/viruses they have. I've been anticipating Five-0 for a while now, so I'm very happy its here.

I've even got my parents using Linspire and they are far from windoze-savvy, much less Linux-savvy. It's great to know that I won't have to do an hour's worth of "fixin'" on my parents pc every time I go home.

People comment on forums other than "hot deals" and "off topic".

Well I guess there is a first time for everything.

If we keep this up someone might think this is a technology forum vs. a rant and rave forum.....

Doing better than me. I'm still stuck at the new account setup window. :disgust:

Got in. It was a browser popup blocker that was the culprit.

60 hours to go. I see 14 people @ 100%, but NONE are sharing. Go leechers!

The sad thing is that no one even wants my 41% @ 40KB/s upload speed.

edit: 68% now, shared a big 40MB. I guess no one wants Linspire. It's a stable, easy distro to set up and no one has to pay anything for click-n-run if they don't want. A free trial is available and the downloaded programs are kept even after the trial ends.

The torrent (linspire_5.0.59.torrent) is for a file named linspire_5.0.59.iso.
Download bittorrent and click the link above.

My download finished yesterday and I played around with it a little. The iso combines an installation disc and live CD.

edit: I see the OP changed his post. PM me if you need help finding it.

I am trying to get this toO! My parents' computer has the same problems and when I come home from college I have to fix their computer, for the same reasons as MrNutz. I'd like to get something that's easy for them to use. I already tried other versions of linux and they just couldn't get used to them. We'll see how this is! Thanks guys!

Man, you so new-school. Real old-school five-o is Jack Lord.

This guy's right on the money

However, it's not under my "My Products" link (I registered in the past to get the older version and I used the same username and password). I only have version 4.5 there.

How does this compare to Knoppix (I've only played with Knoppix LiveCD a few times)?
