Don't usually like Linus's videos but I though this was pretty cool. Not to mention the logistics of the build would be enough for me to throw in the towel pretty early.

If he didn't that's pretty much useless. I like the one they did with unraid since I'm currently using unraid and a lot of htpc users probably do and could use it to create a storage and gaming server.

He said something about unraid but I don't know how one would run that with a bare metal hypervisor like ESXi.

Not sure I see the need to run a software RAID system on something like this anyway. Would make more sense to run a hardware based RAID or no RAID at all since it's just one gaming instance running one each drive.

He could have probably also skipped the water cooling for the CPUs but I guess that would make the system less "cool".

Edit: Oh I see unraid is more than just software RAID. They implemented a Hypervisor at some point.

Most of their stuff is pretty good. Some of it, well, its obvious they have high expectations and sometimes they just don't meet them. Put another way, some of their stuff is mediocre but polished.

That being said, I watch probably 90% of what they post purely out of interest sake.

Overall I think he's doing a good thing, I just tend to find he doesn't always have his facts right. I can't think of specific examples right now but the few of his that I've seen some of his conclusions just don't sit right due to not having all the facts. I expect most people who really know their stuff will see this too but I guess he's not aiming at people like us really.

Everyone is human and makes mistakes at some point.

Because this is what I had planned to do with my unraid build. Use my old gpus to power other gaming rigs. I wonder how he set it up

...which was based on the same Software infrastructure that this Thread that no one noticed was about. Yes, when it is showcase with enough parallel Hardware, everyone screams OMG. Its a world of possibilities.

You had my Xen guide, but its outdated, and Arch Linux centric, and must reupload it AGAIN.

It is supposed to be a more consumer friendly way of setting up Virtualization.

P.S. I've been planning my first build using that with FM2+ for quite some time. (Hoping to get it done this month, but I haven't even started yet....other than having the parts in boxes)

I love unraid 6. I haven't even used the virtualization yes but I want to use it to replace my home Downloader server as well as my pc hooked up to my main TV. It's very very exciting to add it to unraid.

I'm very very happy that I used unraid and not some other makeshift solution.

It's also why I'm excited about zen. Cheap cores means these builds that Linus has shown are a lot more affordable. Right now, getting 12 cores isn't cheap from Intel.

For a cheap Intel octocore, notice the price drop on the E5-2670:

In less than two months it went from $179.00 to $104.99 and I expect it to keep on falling.

Two options for usage:

1.) X79 motherboard

2.) Refurbished Pre-built LGA 2011 Workstation

I guess each VM gets direct hardware access to a single GPU while CPUs are shared by cores. At first I thought it would be a complicated setup but I guess not.

To me, the most interesting thing is actually the custom 7-way waterblock connector and the whole cooling setup. It has to cool 7 top of the line GPUs and two CPUs!

Yup I have those same concerns. Hence why I use the syba because I know it works and why I went Intel.

I hope it works because I'd upgrade my server for a good zen build if it offers enough cores

That psu was nearly at full capacity just running the ungine benchmark which only really stresses the GPU and 1 CPU core at the most. That level will Max out a CPU to compute the grass and draws much more overall power than Ungine or any other game for that matter.

1540W at the wall is only around 1400W on the secondary side. The PSU has a guaranteed reserve of ~200W and a likely reserve of ~400W before any fuses get tripped.
