Linux and games: Will these 10 or so games work. And you can play MP with Windows still right?

I've got a few games here.

Diablo and Diablo 2
Starcraft and Broodwar
Warcraft 2 Battle.net Edition
Age of Empires 2 (not likely? It's an MS game )
Soldier of Fortune
Rune (Unreal engine game)
Halflife (Counterstrike)
Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast (Expansion pack)

Do these games work on Linux well?
Also I have the Windows version of Quake3, I know Q3 works on Linux, but do you need a different version or can you just download something to make Q3 for Win into Q3 for Linux.

Most important are Halflife, Warcraft2BNE and starcraft. Will those work?

Also old DOS games work nicely in Linux w/ Emulator right?

Edit: What's a good soundcard with DOS emulation support for Linux?

If you're a game fanatic, I suggest that you double boot Windows and Linux to begin with.

Most DOS games will work fine on DOSEmu on Linux, so no problems there. Things are a bit more hit-and-miss for Win9x games. Wine, the premier Linux-based Windows emulator, improves each and every day, increasing compatibility. Already, some of the most challenging Windows games and applications run fine on Wine (including Office 2000 and Diablo 2).

My advice to you is to start with a double boot system, try things out on Linux, and slowly migrate to more and more Linux use as you find that DOS or Windows compatibility (or alternative applications or games) meets your needs in Linux.

Thanks.

I am dual booting. I'm trying to set up my games in linux now.

I hate dual booting Pain in the ass, so I'm trying to not dual boot anymore

Are their HOWTOs or FAQs or anything out there?

I'm still kind of a Linux newbie.
I have an UltraSPARC workstation on my desk at work, and we have many servers of both AIX (IBM's Unix) and Solaris. And we also have a 20way IBM Linux cluster So I'm familiar with various Unixes (Unicies? ) and Linux as a user. But I've never seriously uses it as a desktop OS. Just played for fun.

The plural for Unix is Unices.

There really aren't any comprehensive gaming-on-Linux FAQs or docs that I am currently aware of. This is probably because gaming is not a priority in current Linux development. Linux developers are pooling their resources towards three critical areas at the moment.

1) Server-side applications
2) Embedded development
3) Corporate adoption of Linux both on the server and on the desktop

And as you can see, none of these applications are related to gaming on Linux.

My suggestion to you is to search out DOSEmu and Wine FAQ's. Go to the Wine IRC channel and ask developers and frequenters for help on gaming on Wine. That would be a good place to start.

Yeah I know Gaming isn't a major priority for Linux.

And it's not really a major priority for me. If I have to cut a few games loose to move to Linux I will do so. It would be nice to bring them with me, but it's not that big a deal to me.

I'll try that, thanks for the suggestions.

Yes:
Starcraft and Broodwar*
Warcraft 2 Battle©net Edition*
Soldier of Fortune ¥Linux version available, runs great¤
Diablo* -- I can get it started but the menu's are invisible, just memorize the locations :¤

Maybe, not sure:
Age of Empires 2 -- Dunno
Halflife ¥Counterstrike¤ -- I've heard one success story and framerates were decent, you'll need a monster rig and ultra twinked WINE©conf ¥hint: Transgaming Co¤© You'll also need native Windows DLL's
Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast ¥Expansion pack¤ -- No idea but it is a 2D game so©©©
Diablo 2 -- see BG

Not Likely:
Rune -- Unreal is a CPU hog and so WINE's clunkiness will hurt

* Battle©net will look like crap but run fine© Try not to play Zergling Blood in SC©
