I'm really fumbling around in linux land. I edited this one .conf file to reflect my wish for 32 bit graphics, but I changed something I shouldn't have, becuz now it tells me my screen is configured wrongly and I don't get a desktop...just a command prompt. So SuSE just finished installing on a different system (it looks totally different than the first time), and I thought maybe I should ask a few questions before I mess it up. I know there has to be a way to get 32-bit. Noone would settle for 16-bit games, would they? How come SuSE can't include the 3d enabled drivers for nVidia cards? And lastly (for now):

NOTE: The nvidia installer does not work as long as a Xserver is still
running and the nvidia kernel module is still loaded. Therefore
please boot into runlevel 3 by specifying "3" as kernel boot
option or switch to runlevel 3 ("init 3") and unload the kernel
module ("rmmod nvidia") before running the nvidia installer.

Where are the kernel boot options and how do I shut down Xserver?

They don't come with 3D acceleration because the drivers are proprietary.

As root,

init 3
sh name_of_drivers -m

This should build the driver. Make sure you have the kernel headers, else it'll ask for them.

You can either boot to init 3 or change runlevels in terminal. Grub/Lilo will have boot options when you boot up, and if you just put a 3 at the end of the line it'll boot to init 3. From then on, read the nvidia Linux forum and SuSE docs.

You probably changed DefaultDepth to 32, which is an illegal value. The highest you can go is 24 because technically 32-bit color is really 24-bit color with 8 bits used for something else.

the nvidia drivers ARE installed during the initial system update at the end of the installation. If you applied these updates AND selected the nvidia drivers at this time, they are installed and working.
