What can I use to test CPU stability after overclocking under linux?

Find a big chunk of source code and compile it. I recommend Mozilla.

What do you mean? You just wanna max out your cpu usage and see if it freezes?

for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6; do (yes>/dev/null &); done

Then when you're done,

killall yes

Or if you want to stress the whole system:

while 1; do (grep -ir a / &); done

That should bring the entire system to its knees. Make sure you have a root shell open *beforehand*, with "killall -9 grep" already typed out in it, so you can hit enter when you're ready to stop (it'll still probably take a few seconds for it to stop them)

There's a Prime95 client for Linux. I've never used it, but it's very popular for system stress testing.

bootstrap gentoo from stage 1. If your system is unstable, you'll know very quickly.

Edit: Of course that might pose problems for your existing linux install, but its still a good test

Compile a kernel.

Will strees the CPU and memory system, if there's even a slight problem with either, it will fail.
Heck, back when I had my P90 overclocked to 100 MHz everything worked for ages, until I tried to install RedHat 4, the install failed almost right away.

I've compiled kernels just fine, but failed compiling Mozilla and other huge apps. OpenOffice, as suggested, would be great but a pain to set up the environment from what I've heard. But the kernel by itself definitely isn't enough for today's machines.

Funny, I've ran into loads and loads of random errors with kernel compiles when machines have had even the slightest hardware problem.

But then, these boxes haven't exactly been fast enough to run the compile in a minute or two

Same thing either way, just a matter of the size of the program you're compiling.

gcc boostrap compile? it verifies itself at the end of the (long) compile.

ecc2, seti, kernel compile, gcc compile, mozilla compile, move large movie files around between disks, and scp many large files to other systems. That should be a nice little test.

I just found this last night. I ran it for 8 hours and my computer failed 588 of 800 tests

It looks like the longer you run it, the more you fail. For 5 minutes my computer only failed 80
