Linux Distros

I'm thinking of giving Linux another try, after crashing and burning so horribly last time I've heard good and bad things about several distros. I used Mandrake last time around, it was ok, but I'd like some recommendations. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well there is no perfect distro and the best way to find out which one suits you and your computer the best is to try a lot of them. For example, I started with Red Hat, then Mandrake, then Debian, etc..

Anyway, here is a good website that you should go through. If your looking for an "easy" distribution, give SuSE, Red Hat, or Mandrake (try a newer version) a try.

BTW, why was linux giving you a hard time? Was it your hardware?

I personally like SuSE, but the only free (beer) way to install it is by FTP. You can't download ISOs.

I've heard good things about Suse, Redhat was great for me when i started out, It's easy enough but not overly cutesy like mandrake.

I like Debian and slack, but some of the things I have read about SuSE and its employees sounds great. For a desktop, SuSE, Mandrake, and RedHat are probably the best for newer users. I like the simplicity and cleanliness of Debian/Slack though.

After trying a load of distro's, I finally setteled with Debian.

The best packaging system around IMO, and a rather clean system.

After a month of running RH/Suse, I've finally jumped onto the Slack8 bandwagon. And after pulling half my hair out on os/app/kernal installs, I'm liking doing things the hard way.
