Linux ftp: wu-ftpd, proftpd, or ???

I just installed redhat 7.1 on my new machine and am trying to configure an ftp server and was wondering what everyone out there was running. So far I have setup wu-ftpd and am having trouble setting up the chroot for a guest user. I have heard proftpd is more secure and has more set up options. I basically want to share my mp3 files with guest users.

What does everyone think, wu-ftpd, proftpd, or some other ftpd?

I'd just try them, it can't hurt, and you'll probably have your own favorite after you try them all. I'd also throw glftpd in the mix. It's usually used for warez sites, but it can be pretty cool sometimes.

I would stay away from wu-ftpd...

Maybe try ncftpd as well, I like it. do you need download only? If so, you may want to look at an anonymous download only ftp daemon. That would allow for more security.

I use Proftpd© I'd never touch wuftp after that RedHat fiasco© I haven't tried ncftpd but proftpd focuses on security, which is what an ftp server really really needs©

If you have trouble with the default config and anon ftp, try adding some of these lines:
AnonRequirePassword off <-- Not sure if it refers to /etc/passwd or just the email thing
RequireValidShell off <-- /etc/passwd
UseFtpUsers off <-- /etc/ftpusers

Basically, ProFtpd is a very good all-around ftp server. However, it might take you some time to read through its documentation which you probably have to if you want to understand how to configure properly. I personally run ncftpd because it is much more less of a hassle to install and configure. I just didn't have the time to mess around with larger configurations at the time.

I personally run ProFTPD but the only thing I use it for it for my own transferring of files to my machine (on campus network. If I need to put a file on are get a file from my home computer I can easily grab it from FTP).

redhat fiasco i think they are referring to was when redhat 6.2 was shipped. it ran wuftp 2.6 by default. well wuftpd 2.6 had a remote buffer overflow. and many boxes were lost to the dark side. or i gained many boxes, whichever way you wanna look at it. it was a BIG pr problem. i mean, like it was a massively exploited problem. big big fiasco for redhat.

proftpd is good. at lot of people recommend ncftpd. try em all.

ProFTPD rocks! Love it. Also you might want to check out vsftpd (Very Secure FTPD). It's new, but it's new from the ground up and looks quite promising. I'm about to install it on one of my machines and start playing around with it. BEWARE documentation is a bit on the sparse side right now.

Just do a google search and find a good site to download it from.
