So I get this offer from MBNA offering a MasterCard with a "Worldpoints" reward; 1 point for every $1 in purchases. Each point seems to be worth about a penny - I used their web site as refrence. It also has a fixed 9.9% APR. Overall, for me (a college student), this seems like a decent card. More interestingly, it's endorsed by the Linux Fund, and I'm a Linux newbie. I'm curious what are other's opinons of MBNA credit cards and/or the Linux Fund. Does the Linux Fund truly help open source much? Their site doesn't note any exact amount, but does mention that Linus Torvalds has one. Anyone have any experience with this specific card? Thanks for your comments.

I have had an MBNA card since 98, they are great. I dont think mine is part of this "linux fund" though it sounds good. The thing I like best is the "MBNA Shopsafe" which lets you create one time use credit card numbers for online purchases. Kinda helps minimize the fraud.

I love the 1 time use cc feature which Amex and CitiBank also offer.

i've had less than desirable experiences with MBNA as a credit card bank. I'm close to paying my card off, and will be closing the account.

MBNA probably has more vanity cards (associations with groups) than anyone else. They're also big in the college (first time, irresponsible, supported-by-parents cardholders) market.

ShopSafe was one of the first, and still a great service, but I used Citibank's VAN clone (probably the same technology from an Irish company) once they arrived.

So no reason not to go with MBNA, although I doubt their Linux card is contributing a whole lot. Seriously, they probably have a thousand different co-branded cards.

The reason I don't use the MBNA account much anymore is that it has no rewards, and they've never sent me an interesting B.T. offer.

I had a linux fund card since 97. Got rid of it last year. MBNA has a great online bill pay/account management interface. I got rid of the card because when i moved off to a 0% card. Always loved pulling out that card and girls seeing the penguin on it and saying "Oh, you love penguins". "Umm, Yep"

They melt for that stuff

Actually I think BankOne beats MBNA with having the most number of branded credit cards.
