Just felt like sharing my sense of accomplishment.

After fooling aroundwith Red Hat 8 (1-2 days) I decided to try Mandrake 9.1 based on a couple of comments and recommendation from our fellow members.

Install was quite painless except my conexant modem being a winmodem was not recognized (expected)
So I head over to LINUXANT and downloaded there hsf driver and after a few attempts at installation I finally hear the glorious sound of my modem dialing up hooray for me.

I am doing most of the configuring thru grapics interface as the command lines are quite alien to me. Kind of like learning chinese.
I know Linux gurus will look at me with distaste and flog me for not learning to use the console box, but I wanted to at least have a box running efore messing around.

Couple of questions
1. How can I enable my web browser to open up the dial up connection upon opening the browser? The way I have to do it is open KPPP--dial up==press connect--wait for connection then press my browser Mozilla.

2. what imaging or back up programs are you guys using? I want something like ghost or drive image. I plan to mess around a lot and would like the comfort of having a backup image ready for restoration.

3. I need to install server and samba to set up file sharing how do I do this? Do I boot up the install disc again or can I browse and click somewhere

Play around linux box:
Pentium III 450mhz
128 sdram
4gb 5400rpm HD
generic 50x cdrom
conexant winmodem
generic lan card
generic soundcard

next goal is to set up file sharing with my xp boxes at home.

Peace

I recommend Mandrake 9.1 for the ultra NEWBIE who wants to try Linux.
I can burn you guys a copy if you want just pay for the cd's and shipping

2. If you've got another partition big enough, just copy everything over to it. If you have to restore it, just boot from a rescue disk, mount your main and backup partitions, and copy everything from the backup partition over to the main partition.

3. Find the RPM on the Mandrake CD that apears to be that of Samba. Run rpm -ivh file to install. If you absolutely must have a GUI, take your chances with rpmdrake.

sounds very simple to do specially in windows explorer, but in linux may take some homework.
I did not save any space when installing Mandrake and let it use up all the harddrive spave 4gb (default installation)
All I know is

/dev/hdc -------/ --2177mb----995 free

/dev/hdc 6-----/home ----1428mb----1389 free

so I guess I do not have any partition to copy to.
I was planning to copy it over my lan into a xp box once I get the file sharing working.
So there is no idiot proof create image---copy image to disc--restore as needed software?

Find the RPM on the Mandrake CD that apears to be that of Samba. Run rpm -ivh file to install. If you absolutely must have a GUI, take your chances with rpmdrake.

will look at my cd now and thanks for advise on rpmdrake will see if its in the cd also. Its giong to take awhile to get used to the non-gui interface.

peace and thanks

ghost in norton 2002 and 2003 will do an exact copy.
from the command line in ghost, type ghostpe.exe -IR , or ghost.exe -IR, depending on your version of ghost. It needs to be 6.5 or higher, I believe. This will write the new config to the floppy, and reboot. this time around, it gives some different options, and does a sector-by-sector copy. Worked great.

For Mandrake 9.1, just go to the control center, and use the install software program under the software tab. Search for samba, select the packages, and it'll prompt you for the CDs as it installs the packages. Works very very well. Also, you can go to http://plf.zarb.org to get instructions on how to get access to RPMs of more multimedia software that was no included in mandrake.
