Linux Help---Inetd.Conf--Newb

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm trying to setup SAMBA, and SWAT at the same time.

I can't figure out one thing. In order to get SWAT to run, I have to enter a line in the Inetd.conf file (/etc/), but there's not one on my box. I'm running Redhat 7.1 that I FTpd from Redhat.

Where do I go from here?

man swat will tell you the lines you need to add to /etc/inetd.conf and to /etc/services. Honest.

if you're not running inetd, you *can* run swat directly
just start it up as root, using "/usr/sbin/swat" and connect to it like normal....although it may not work. wont hurt to try.

the other option is to install inetd from the rpm on your RH cd.

Look up info on xinetd. RedHat uses that instead of inetd. /etc/xinetd/ I think is where you can find it but Im not sure. I dont use RedHat

But once you have a usable smb.conf you wont need swat anymore, so why bother putting it in xinetd?

Dang! RH 7.1. Yes, it's xinetd.

Why use it? Umm, cause tcpwrappers is some good schnizzit. Does lot's more than smb.

Does it? I never played with it much after I got my smb.conf setup

Umm, dude, okay n0cmonkey, it "wraps" ftp, telnet, pop2, pop3, imap, smtpd, and some more schtuff. And that's wimpy ole inetd, xinetd is much more robust in what it can do. tcpwrappers rocks! And, it's not just a Linux thang. Heck, it ran on this Solaris 2.6 box we're about to shut down. So it's cool.

I agreed with you. I know what tcpwrappers does, and I like the functionality myself
