I'm hosting a website off my linux box at home with my cable connection so the ip stays fairly constant (hasn't changed in a couple of years). I've been using one of those dynip services to give me a semi-readable url, but I just recently bought a domain name and I'm not sure how to go about having the requests to that domain go to my linux box. Right now I just have the new domain forward all requests to my old url. I imagine I have to enter in my computer's ip for the DNS on the domain setup, and setup a DNS server on the box, but I'm not sure if that's what I need to do. Any help would be appreciated. I'm running Suse 9.2 Pro. Sure, it'd be easier just to host the site somewhere, but I'm cheap.

Your dynamic IP service can handle it. dyndns does it for a reasonable fee. I think you just have to give them the DNS server IPs or something.

dyndns was the service I was using actually. It appears the use of their nameservers costs $24/yr. Not too shabby.

You can get "real" web hosting for less then that.

Ya sure you can find dirt cheap hosting. If that is all you want.

But I find having a server is actually fairly usefull for lots of other reasons.

Also what I would like to do, personally, is switch to a ISP that has static IP's offered and actually encourages it's customers to setup servers and such. Unfortunately the only SDSL is offered in my area, and that is expensive, so the local cable company is my only choice and they beleive internet access is only suppose to go one direction for some reason.

Once I move though, I have a couple in mind I'd like to look at.. A couple local ISPs and Speakeasy come to mind right now.

you won't find any ISP that doesn't charge increased Business rates in exchange for them creating a "server-friendly" account.

Your wrong. There are a couple in my area and there are a few nationwide. They may be more expensive then your local phone company cut-rate BS. But if you have DSL you get to pick and choose which company you want.

Most of the time they have servers for you and you can even get ISPs that still have good usenet support, will give you more then one static IP by default and and even local Linux RPM mirrors.

Hell you can get free shell account on their servers if your lucky.

One good one that've found is Speak Easy. They even let you share your internet connection with your neighbor if you want, as long as you don't try to resell your connection.

They have packages for 'home users' that offer different insentives.

They have 'Gamers' for people that are gaming freaks. They have teamspeak servers, file servers you can download from (filecloud/gamecloud). You get one static IP with normal email spam/virus protection.

They have the 'Tech' package. This one comes with a Unix shell account, seperate dial-up, and 2 static IPs as well as email and such.

Then they have the 'Hosting' package. They give you 500mb of space on their webservers with Apache and MySQL as well as Domain name registration and renewal. Email stuff with that, but with your own domainname for email.

Home Office plus gives you a dynamic IP, email/spyware/antivirus, VoIP, webhosting and Windows 2000 server rental.

All the prices are the same for the packages, except home office which adds 20bucks...
1.5Mb/s down 384kb/s up for 60 bucks a month.
1.5Mb/s down 768kb/s up for $90
6.0Mb/s down 768kb/s up for $110

Then they have plainjane 'home' which is 768Kb/s down, 128kb/s up for $40.

All and all it's very cool. Then they have business-level selections beyond that. They have a much better attitude then my current cable connection.

I just wish I had ADSL offered, then I'd switch in a heartbeat. There are a couple I found in my local area that do similar things..(not so much with the features, but they promise not to port block and offer static IPs.) And I may check those out, and there are other ISPs that seem cool, but speakeasy is the big one I know about.

no-ip - works like a charm and does exactly what you want, they even offer a mail service that takes email that is sent to your domain and then redirects it to you on another port since cable companies like mine - cox have killed me getting anything in on port 25 but, between the 2 and a domain name you are at about $80/year, but again you have your own server with as much damn space as you need.

I use no-ip also and have for almost 4 years. great service and never had any issues with them. I use them for dns services as well as mail forwarding and backup.

Thank god for the MX backup services lol I had a hardware crash that has had my system in a BAD state the past 3 weeks and I never lost an email due to bounces.
