or more specifically REDHAT is cool!

I tried Mandrake linux on 2 separate occasion and was quickly bored by it.
Yesterday, I installed Redhat 6.2 in one of the old spare PC at work and it works at first go! Installed StarOffice 5.1 today. Hhhmm. remind me of some sunOS i used to run sim in school.

P/S: Win2K Pro still rules!

PP/S: maybe I should start using the penguin avatar. (shameless junior grasshopper!)

It works, it's free, anybody can modify/fix things, and it's not by MS. For anybody getting into development the Unix "style" OS's also make for a much easier and robust development platform. Using Linux (or anything other OS/computer program/whatever) ain't gonna be like plugging in an I.V. with some freaky drugs and watching yourself travel to new worlds. Software just isn't that exciting. It's the philosophy behind the thing.

For server stuff I am all for it. As a desktop OS, it blows me plenty. XWindows is the most gross, anti-productive GUI I have ever used. It takes years for the X consortium to approve things as simple as anti-aliased fonts. How do they ever expect to take on NT on the desktop at that rate? I wish they (the Linux community)would just dump X and write a hardcore, lightweight GUI. I think some people have already done this, but X is still the standard.

X-Windows isn't a gui though. The window managers make the gui. X is basically a method to communicate with a screen via TCP/IP. KDE to me is a beatiful GUI system that rivals NT completely. Plus that fact that X11 is based on TCP/IP makes it trivial to bring up windows from multiple computers here and there. For instance I was once working on one of the deparmental Solaris x86 machines (was in lab, and attendence is required). I needed to write some SPARC assembly though, so I simply bring up a terminal window from one of the Solaris SPARC machines a few buildings over. I wanted to talk w/ some friends though, and we're not allowed to keep IM clients of any type in our user space. The solution? Telnet back into my Linux box in my dorm and bring up the ICQ client from there. Sitting at one workstation and transparently using the resources/capabilities of two more. That's anything but antiproductive, and one of the main reasons I say Linux smokes Win-anything when using a machine for development.

Right on Red Dawn.

Though the days of saying "Linux is Cool" being cool have passed by about a year ago

<< , scratched my ass and wondered what all the fuss was about? >>

Hehe, well I'm guessing I look a tad biased, I am too I think Anyway I had a few paragraphs written up a few days ago in OS forum about what I thought were linux' strong and weak points. Its definatley the strongest as a server os, but its improving as a desktop too. The main reason I like it for a desktop when I use it as that is because of stability and the efficiency of its use of resources. The tons of free software written is a small bonus and the fact that its not MS doesn't really mean a thing to me. I'm going to use what performs the task at hand best. I like going months without rebooting

My prefered distrobution at the moment is slackware. I have been using linux since 1994(? maybe 95). Those who speak of X-Windows in a negative manner do not know what it is capable of, nor do they understand it. People who 'bash' X usually have NO clue as to what it can do, and what its capable of. X has been in development for a long time, is very standardized VERY stable, and VERY configureable. Not to mention all kinds of features, like the one MGMorden mentioned. Although IMO I dislike KDE, and Gnome.

People who think that there needs to be a new Gui totally from scratch are nuts. There is alot of effort into X, and its recently picked up more speed. Although like everything, its not 'perfect', and doesnt have the MultiMedia capabilities of Windows 2000, it will. Starting over would not only scratch and entirely good interface, but you'd have to start ALL over. X is so configurable its very easy to add in such things like MultiMedia. Recent development of the 4.x series as been wonderfull, and moving along quiet fast.

In my opinion X is a good Desktop enviorment. I use it at home as well as at various jobs I've had. Its been my expereince that people who come up with crazy ideas for X, or think that it needs to be scraped, or that its no good, dont know how to utilize it at all. RTFM baby, and you can find plenty of really COOL things about X-Windows.

BlackBox is my favorite Window Manager, although its not as fancy as KDE or GNOME it is quiet usefull and configurable. Not to mention lightweight and fast. Its not for everyone. Thats another thing about X-Windows, you can use whatever 'Window Manager' you want. Separating those two things is what makes X so powerfull, its very diverse. You just need to relize what it really can do.

I understand what X is and I do know what it is capable of. I also realize it is not a GUI as opposed to the window managers, etc and so on. I still think it sucks. The bottom line is that it s-l-o-w. Nevermind remote X connections. I am talking running right on the desktop. There are too many layers to go through just to do a screen draw. I don't want that. I am willing to sacrifice the sophisticated features of X for a kick ass fast GUI.

I have run KDE, Gnome and a ton of other window manager. None of them were able to give me the performance I needed. I also thought they were all quite ugly, mainly because of the fonts and slow redraws. To each his own.

While I'm not trying to push anybody into anything (as you said to each his own. one should use whatever fits their needs), the font thing with X is no longer an issue as Xfree86 4.0 and newer all have TrueType font support included. You can use any Windows or freeware truetype fonts you want and then you'll have beautifully scaling fonts. Now we just need to get some tt's in the default Xfree install, but as it is it works fine.

And also, don't expect any "cutting of sophisticated features" for performance from Microsoft. They're stuff doesn't get faster over time, it gets bigger.
