Ok, here's another candidate, for your perusal...

Guayadeque: http://guayadeque.org

It’s stable, lightweight and it can handle huge music libraries.[...]

Guayadeque has all the features you would expect from a modern player, a selection of which include:

  • Sound engine that works with 32bits for better sound quality, specially noticeable in the equalizer and replaygain
  • Tabbed interface: hide and move components around and save it in layouts.
  • Navigate your library by artists, album artists, albums, ratings, genres, etc
  • Add custom labels (like in Gmail) to tracks, albums or artists – Labels can be used for navigation (e.g. subgenres) or in dynamic playlists
  • Tag editor with Music Brainz integration
  • Configurable crossfade engine, silence detector and equalizers
  • Play and record user defined and shoutcast radios
  • Podcasts, Jamendo and Magnatune support
  • Support for media player devices, including iPods
  • Last.fm and Libre.fm scrobbling
  • Last.fm tab with info of the current track: Artist Info, Top Albums, Top Tracks, Similar Artists, Similar Tracks and Events
  • Dynamic and static playlists. Playlists can be used as filters for Smart Mode and Random Mode.
  • Search for album covers (and download them automatically if you want) in Google images, Amazon, Last.fm and Discogs
  • Customizable lyrics sources
  • Options to embed covers and lyrics into the tracks
  • Customizable links (e.g. YouTube, Wikipedia, Google news) and commands (normalize, burn in Brasero, open in Nautilus) that can be invoked on any selection
  • Copy To where you can define target locations based on tags, change the format and quality (transcoding) and optionally remove the source files
  • Taskbar icon and Sound Menu integration
  • Album browser (search by album covers) and file browser
  • Vumeters

Ok, one thing I REALLY don't like is it only works with playlists, and I'm not seeing how to easily make a big playlist out of my whole library. It seems like it would work better for people who use a more abstract way of manipulating their music. The way I set my stuff up, my music's organized by hard file/folder names, not meta data attached to the files. I don't deal with genres or anything like that. for genres I have a few rough categories, and fit everything into folders that way. The interface is a little cluttered also. they try to put too much in too small a space.

Final verdict, I don't think I'll keep it. My fat player is still between Banshee and Clementine, but I really haven't been using them. They've just been sitting on my drive waiting for me to make a decision. DeaDBeeF is a tough act to follow, at least for the way I use/listen to music. The interface is very simple, but everything I need is right there. If it gets WMA support, I may just uninstall everything else. I guess I could re-rip my CDs, but that would take some effort :^D I have stuff in a few different formats from my early days. I tried a few codecs before settling on mp3. It may not sound the best, but it's hard to beat it's universal compatibility :^)

Found another good one, Foobnix. Simple layout, and a few more features than DeadBeef. I'm still trying it out, but so far I'm digging it. The album art works a little better than DeadBeef for my purposes. There's stuff I like about both players and it'll be interesting to see how development advances between them. I have a mild preference for DeadBeef right now, but that might be familiarity. Check it out. There's several package options for installing it on various distros, and Windows/OSX as well...

I have been following this thread for a while, because I was in the same boat for a while, but got more into gaming and pretty much always boot into Win7 now. Basically, I remember using XMMS when I first started using Linux, because it emulated the best media player ever IMO, Winamp. I haven't checked on it's development in a long time because I was getting by with rythmnbox that came with my Ubuntu distro. I might have to check out this Foobar though, how does it compare to Winamp?

Nice Godspeed lyrics in your sig, BTW. That album and Lift Your Skinny Fists was my soundtrack the last time I was in Death Valley, very appropriate.

I used to use Amarok when I used kubuntu on my main machine. I see they have a new version out, but it's using rather iTunes-y.
